You know, as many horrible things as Hitler did, I think pre-holocaust Hitler would've been an interesting guy to talk to. He wasn't born "that guy that killed 6 million jews", he became that way over time. It's interesting to think how the events of one's life can lead to that. The origins of the word have been translated loosely as "one who opposes another" and "one who initiates change". There are many people who fit the bill for this that you can sort of make a case for being good and/or bad at the same time. Like, if you take a lot of the early leaders of the industrial revolution in America, such as Andrew Carnegie, JD Rockefeller, Thomas Edison, and other such people there's the argument of whether or not they are "captains of industry" or "robber barons", and the answer generally lies somewhere in the middle but people will generally prefer to simplify it to one or the other. History in general is grossly oversimplified a lot of the time, with the American Civil War being one example. Many people genuinely seem to believe that it was the morally righteous North versus the big bad racist South when in reality most Northerners were actually about equally as racist and mostly opposed to slavery for economic reasons, and most Southerners were dirt poor and weren't huge plantation owners. In general, it's important to treat history and by extension people as a whole as if they're just that, people. Posted by AtomicAstro This is why I suspect history has looked upon Hitler and the Nazi party as they have; they were about as evil and blatantly villainous as anything could ever be. In a world with so much moral grey areas, having a clear villain can be strangely comforting in a way. |

I hope so. There's this stray cat that's always walking around my neighborhood but I never get a good opportunity in to pet it. Any time I see it, it always runs off somewhere before I can even approach it. Occasionally I see the motion light in front of my basement door go off, see the cat, and I go outside and it's already gone somewhere else.
