Just played through Ranma 1/2: Toraware no Hanayome; this game is a digital comic for the PC Engine CD, and it's the first in the genre I've played. Was good language practice; I've been trying to dust off my Japanese and get better at it.

I have mixed feelings about it. For one thing, it was really fun to go through! I'm a big fan of the Ranma 1/2 franchise, the story was silly and fun, the art was great (the fact that the standard CD-ROM2 sucks at FMV actually gave it a unique feel, since they couldn't just fall back on the anime).

But the thing is, it never really felt like... a game? Like the closest it got to a game was basically "choose the options in the right order, or we'll wait until you do". Even the visual novels I've played generally have more game elements, at least multiple endings or a losing condition.

I ought to give this a try, I enjoyed Ranma a lot despite the series kind of dropping in quality past the third season or so for me. Around the time English Ranma got a new voice. I'm glad they were forced to create their own art, I'm personally a sucker for that "90's anime in pixel art form" sort of style and am making a game at the moment that is planned to have that sort of style.

I really should get back into learning Japanese. It's a super difficult language, but very fun. Kanji really trips me up though. It wouldn't be so bad if each one didn't have 2-4 different pronunciations. Hiragana/katakana I'm pretty good with, though I can't write in them for shit. I can always remember and pronounce the characters when I see them, but I can never just write them down off the top of my head.

Animal Crossing has taken over my life since I'm unemployed now.

Spent the day yesterday covering my island in hard paths tiles to force my rocks to all spawn together. After I finished ripping all of the path tiles up and replacing my dark dirt roads, I surrounded my orchard (which is now an enormous 20 trees per fruit) and my oak/pine forest with wooden path tiles, and my bamboo garden with cobblestone.

I made a canyon-esque cascade path to the tiny beachlet where Dickhead Redd shacks up his Exxon reenactment-waiting-to-happen. The sheer amount of waterfall action actually makes the game's frame rate dip significantly, which I find hilarious.

I made a garden of flowers referencing the wiki on what I need for cross-pollenating. I'm only missing blue windflowers, orange roses, and another pair of red lilies to be able to have every possible color cross at some point down the line. If only I knew how to influence the color crossing. The orange and pink tulips and pink windflowers I have were accidental, and I want to know what I did beyond fucking up my initial scattershot planting.

I've continued Animal Crossing, unlike @Emuz, I feel like I'm playing too much. It's cutting into my other gaming.

I've gotten my island to a ★★★★☆ rating, and I can't figure out what I need to do to cross the threshold to ★★★★★. All Isabelle says is "Decorate the whole island" BUT WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Does that mean every subsection of the map needs something in it? If so, what and how many? Can I meet that requirement with flowers? I don't want a bunch of DIY and purchased shit all over my island. I already have WAY TOO MANY roads that I feel have taken away from my natural aesthetic I'm going for.

Silver lining: My lilies bred a black flower this morning. Now to cordon it off and continue tending it until it starts to clone itself.

The thunderhead: I will never get my hands on a purple pansy under natural occurrence, because pansies don't spawn under my island condition because the parent orange pansies (specific phenotype) are island tour-only, and I don't have island tour pansies.

In other gaming news, I now understand why SquareEnix wanted to bury Dragon Quest Builders into obscurity to prop the sequel. It's a fucking terrible game. Finally made it to the chapter 1 boss, and the fucker is damn near untouchable.

"Use the Cantlin Shield to block attacks!" the game shrieks. COOL! I'LL GET RIGHT ON THAT AS SOON AS THIS BASTARD STOPS JUMPING TO THE FUCKING MOON AND LANDING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CITY! I don't want to make another set of wayfarer's clothes just for the minute speed boost.

OH YEAH! Your gear has durability, and the only items you can see your current wear on is your visible tool (weapon, hammer, etc). You could be in the middle of combat and your fucking clothes fall off because you took one too many hits, leaving you completely vulnerable. GREAT DESIGN SQUONX!

I want my fifty dollars back.

I also started playing Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. I bought it on a whim because the dev was following me on Twitter when I was playing their Zelda-like, Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King. They interacted with my tweets until I started tearing the game apart because some of their design flaws were glaring through, then they scuttled off.

This one surprised me, it's a Shantae-like. Pretty neat stuff. I'm pleasantly enough enjoying the game, only a few places annoyed me (but mostly through player-error). Except the dungeon I'm in now, the volcano. It makes NO SENSE and is brutal with how much damage it inflicts for MINOR ERRORS! Even in Frog/Lion form with the ice armor! Getting to the healing save point while preserving my auto-rez potion was NOT easy. Hopefully it was a case of "I've been playing for eight hours this session and am getting tired" because I am thoroughly not enjoying this section.

Hmm, no. I hated the extra buttons used for combo attacks with the babies.

Been getting more consistent 1cc's of The NewZealand Story.
I've managed to do the route with warps and the long warpless one, both at Hard difficulty.

Once I'm confident enough, I'll try and see how's the hardest difficulty of what's considered an already difficult game. :D

A fun thing is that when you get to this point, the difference between this and other versions like the FM Towns one become more obvious. It's the best home port of the game and many of the strats of the arcade version work, but still there are differences to throw you off, like:
  • Enemies spawning in at the start of the level before you can move, making them very hard to dodge
  • Points where enemies die and don't respawn, and you basically have to lose a life to continue (a section in 4-4 being a bad offender).
  • Not being able to spam shots as fast. While I don't know if this is just an effect of the emulator, this directly leads to...
  • The final boss being faster, meaning you can't spam the shoot button in a safe spot. :p
For comedy I should try again the X68k version, which (surprisingly) feels off, has broken movement and other insane changes for the worse.

Since I finally have a Switch, Pokémon Shield.

Honestly, I'm loving it. I know some people don't like the wild area.. but I see it as a giant safari zone of sorts. So many zones, so many Pokémon.

Three badges down, five to go.. I guess.

The world could always use more heroes!

My misadventures on my island continue by breaking down and looking up what the ★★★★★ requirements were, and I was right. I needed a bunch more items (DIY and purchased) to clusterfuck my island with. What I ended up doing was doing the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM to hit the threshold to get my golden watering can recipe, and now I'm keeping the rating up to get ten lilies of the valley. Once I get my special flower quota, I'm gonna rip the shit up that's uglifying my island and do what I want again.

As for flowers: I decided to hunker down and breed my way to a blue rose, which is not going particularly well... Following a guide, I'm about 1/3 of the way there, and I'm even accelerating the process with time travel. As far as other flower varieties I'm missing, they are: purple pansies, green chrysanthemums, black cosmos, and purple hyacinths. They're all the super rare variants, go figure.

As for the other 48 varieties in the game that I have: I plucked everything but what was in my breeding and cloning beds, gathered them by species and color, and took stock. I reduced populations of colors per species to 20, then will be cloning those under 20 until they reach that point. The exceptions being lilies of the valley and gold roses, I want ten of them because they're so hard to get a hold of due to cloning not working on them.

This is an exercise in frustration.

I decided that 20 was too many of each flower, so I reduced that threshold to 10. Further thinking about it, I found that the 10 was too many, so I will be reducing to 5.

There will be flowers I will be maintaining above 5, but the majority will be getting cut down.

Flowers I will be keeping above 5: gold roses (they're fucking valuable, 1000 bells per flower, every other day is INSANE) that I have 13, lilies of the valley that I have 26, anything in blue or purple (varying greatly from species to species), and green mums that I have 13. What I'll be paring them down to hasn't been decided as of yet, but I can say that my lilies of the valley and gold roses will be maintained as-is. I may keep no more than 10 at the max of any variety of flower. Still need to decide where I'm putting what flowers.

I'm like ten years late to the party, but I just got into Minecraft lately. I'm currently working on a fairly large underwater build in my friend's survival server, which turned out to be a daunting task. ^^;;; I probably should have found sponges or something, but placing dirt blocks everywhere I want to get rid of the water works. Shovels hate this one weird trick!

Also recently played through Final Fantasy VII Remake and miiiight go for another playthrough soon. Maybe?
