Recently, I figured I'd install that SSD I had lying around since a while. I hooked it alongside the existing HDDs and installed a clean Windows on it. I figured I'd copy the files from my previous system HDD and then remove it.

But the Windows installer didn't think so. It did some weird shit and now the drives are interlinked in an odd fashion.

Basically, if I take out the previous system HDD, computer won't boot.

And more weirdly and annoyingly, if the Windows install DVD isn't present, it won't boot either.

I googled a bit, some persons got the same issue and it is said that repairing the OS three times or so will fix it. So I took the old system HDD out, and tried to repair the system, up to the point it won't detect issues anymore. But it still won't boot without both the old system HDD and Windows disc.

For now, I put back the old system HDD and hooked an old laptop DVD drive with the Windows disc in it. It works, but it's a hack. I don't want to stay like that forever.

Any help on this problem is welcome.

You forgot to post what Windows you're talking about. Vista, 7, XP, 98, 1.0? >_>

Oh right. Windows 7.

I attempted unplugging all the HDDs except the one with my current system. Ran Windows repair up to where it wouldn't find errors anymore. That is, 4 times total. And guess what? Nope, still not fixed.

I might just wipe that shit and reinstall it right, that is, with no other HDD plugged in so that dumb installer won't link my OS to other crap.

Bootrect.exe /RebuildBcd

I bet you did that already..

back when I was testing 7 I used something else...
bcdedit.

When used it I had to basically put it on a flash drive and use the boot DVD to repair it. I did it when I switch drives for boot by reinstalling windows. Maybe it'll work for you? (I only looks quickly but it looks like the docs are good)

Nope. No bootrec.exe or bootrect.exe here. Or perhaps it's hiding somewhere but cmd fails to see it.

As for bcdedit I have no idea how to use that thing. Shitloads of options and crap.

Edit- oh wait, I'm dumb. That's supposed to be run from the Windows DVD... let's try it out then.

Did that get you any success? I've found that bootloader to be finicky in the past.. :P

I somehow managed to fix it.

I copied the BCD from the old HDD to the new one and ran Windows Repair. Then, I removed the unneeded entries and fixed the rest to point to partition=C:. Now I can take out the old system HDD.

As for the 'Windows DVD always needed' issue, it was unrelated. My BIOS was set to boot on the CDROM first, which always worked fine in IDE mode... but apparently the AHCI BIOS doesn't like it when there's no disc to try to boot on. Setting it to boot on HDD first fixed it.

Actually, you'll have that issue happen because it's looking for the MBR when you do the transfer and for some odd reason W7 installs can go awry when you do a transfer from one drive to another. I did that from a hard drive to an SSD and got similar. It wasn't just a Windows Install DVD that could get by it either - anything that had an MBR that could boot into Windows (like a Hiren's BCD) could alleviate the problem.

I believe it was something to do with the placement of the System Reserved partition. I think mine ended up putting itself on another hard drive when I tried to get the new hybrid to work right and I eventually resolved it.
