So that's how file deletion tends to go.. that's a.. pretty sloppy way of doing it.

(Curse you Maxtor! Never again!)

I think my very first harddrive was a Maxtor. Or maybe the one that I stopped using a while ago because one partition started to vanish and come back. But it was old. Very old.

Ah, correction. One of my current drives is a Maxtor. It's the oldest one. All other drives are of the Western Digital Caviar brand. :P

And I don't believe I've ever sold a used disk. My little brother has probably used some of my older ones when I've bought new ones.

Basically when an OS deletes something all it does is erase the index for a file. The file remains on the drive and can be recovered. The file isn't actually deleted until something is written over top of it. Now what "WipeDrive" or any "secure erase" program does is write over it with 0's or random data to completely remove it. Wipedrive works on the whole drive so it erases everything there. Other programs (and some OSes) have an option to do a secure erase.

More complicated explanation for a more complex time ;D

Why would we want that? Not that I'm a dick/stupid or anything. :P

The file isn't actually deleted until something is written over top of it.
SSD's are a exception though, due to the fact it's faster to write to "cleared memory" (technically the memory HAVE to be clear to be even written to). So after you delete a file, the OS (anything more recent than Win Vista) sends the TRIM command to the relevant sectors which pretty much actually deletes the actual file content. Just cause it's faster on SSD's to do it that way unlike the typical magnetic drives that most still use. For more info about TRIM, check out this wiki article.

In the old days I'd just throw old broken hard drives and such into the Dumpster. Then I got rather paranoid about something: my undergrad college recalled all student hard drives to send to the FBI after a virus showed up specifically targeting student computers (these were provided by the school, so I guess it was legal), and I had some politically-oriented AIM logs I didn't really want them to see <_< >_> So nowadays I'll get one of those "shredder" programs and use it on any sensitive data.

Oh I'll get second hand data on warranty drives every once in a while. I had customer system data on a warranty drive from Lenovo just this past week in a laptop I dropped off. That god short DoD'd real quick. We've reported that kind of stuff but it will happen because people don't want to go through the extra effort of covering their ass.

DBAN is a nice tool, that said.

Recently, while cleaning stuff up I found some old broken HDDs that had been opened for a school project or something. I hammered the plates, reading heads and electronics, before putting them with other crap for disposal. That should do it :)

As for shredding, I have a small file shredder that overwrites the file with ones then zeroes before deleting it. I originally wrote it for Jceggbert5 because he wanted to shred files and his computer had parental control software that would block common file shredders. However I also happened to use it myself.

Very nice!

I still have access to my work's hardware recycling if I want to make sure something gets destroyed for sure. (They have a guarantee, plus they magnetize the drives and grind them up nice and small. :))

One thing I like about the wipedrive program is it's small enough for resident ram so you load it, take your source media out and let it sit. :)
