I have a medical monitor that's sort of old that has a touch screen. It's large, and uses a serial connection. I'm not even sure if I can get it to interface with the computer I will be building. I might try it out if I can be bothered to.

Er, there's something misleading info about development for Windows 8. Windows 8 on desktop will run all x86 based apps just fine. Only ARM versions are required for tablets and honestly, the .NET framework has such a huge base it won't matter as .NET runs byte code, not direct machine compilation.

Windows 8 also supports a version of JavaScript and HTML to run apps natively on either desktop or tablets just fine. Independent development isn't being hampered in anyway. Windows 8 just runs on arm based tablets because ARM is better suited for mobile devices anyways since it has low power consumption.

I've been running Windows 8 fully on my gaming rig since Development Preview and it hasn't been too much of a problem for me. I actually kind of like it. Its a lot more efficient I think than 7 in terms of space and speed. The Metro UI is, well, its ok. I think they should def have an option for the classic start menu interface for desktop if desktop only, and have it mandatory in the new Windows Server, which currently only allows the Metro UI as well for the start menu, which is kind of dumb. As for the ARM version, yes it's only for tablets, and even then it depends on the specs. Razer is coming out with a W8 tablet with full capabilities because they're using some more powerful tech. Its to keep the price low on some of the tablets to compete with iPad, ultrabooks, etc so its understandable. Like the Surface is coming out in a 300-400 dollar ARM version and a like 600-800 dollar x86 W8 version which will have all the capabilities as a desktop.

All in all, for the average user it might be confusing in the desktop to run their computer, not knowing the new shortcuts to get to your desktop, but eventually it will click I think. And systemwise like I said, runs a lot smoother I think than 7 did, and I'll use it just for that. Gamewise, well haven't had many problems other than beta drivers and problems with a pre-beta of a certain MMOFPS coming out.

Welp, the RTM dropped, so I'll be able to play with the release version on the 15th. (Which means I need to step up my desktop reworking.)

I really would like to experience Metro on a tablet before I say much about it. It's new so out of the gate things will be buggy and you won't really have many apps to use on it, however as with all things. That'll change :)

(How the public accepts it we'll see..)

Both Valve and Blizzard have talked negatively about Windows 8. Infact it seems to be part of Valve's decision of focusing on a Linux port of Source and Steam. Gabe Newell in particular have spoken favorably about Linux, which is kind of funny when you consider that he formerly worked on Windows within Microsoft before forming Valve.

Personally I don't really like the focus on touch-based devices lately and I find Metro highly alienating for a long time desktop computer user.

I haven't tried this thing yet. But I know it will have the metro style thing.
Also, is this is expected to be on most computer when its releases, like win7 now? >_>
I heard this was only for the touch screen devices...

As far as I know Microsoft intends this to replace Windows 7 entirely- if it really bombs then you might see what happened during the Vista era with people still selling the older OS, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I tried something named mosaic, which is supposed to be like the Win8 metro style and it sucks to use it with the mouse, since its designed for touchscreens. I know win8 has the desktop, but I wonder why removed the start button. I use it often...
Ill stick to Win7 in the meantime.

I think I can get the RTM version now, but I think I will wait. I have been trying (but I keep getting interrupted lol. The install failed due to a distraction online :P.) I want to do that, plus I need to further fix my Win 7 install as I need it for a while for a project. After that I'll will install Windows 8 again.. (It's in my nature to try all the OSes) :)

Edit: So has anyone played with the RTM version yet? I've not had much time last while to really do anything other than work and few small things.

Also we have a Metro (*cough* "That certain kind of interface formerly known as Metro) theme made by @Nicole so if like it the interface, we have a theme for that. :) (If not @Nina made a whole bunch of conversions from AB1. I've fixed a few thing with them today so the images work. Dani's even has it's logo)

I have recently installed the RTM version on my old computer and it works out pretty well. Also, I recently figured out that you can access the control panel by hovering the mouse on the right bottom corner and then options pop up. I have to get used to a few things but yeah, I like how clean my computer is now. Things are running smoothly it seems.

Well, more so than a test I've done with XP freshly clean. It is hard to explain I suppose.

When I used 8 did notice it was faster compared to a fresh Win 7 install but a hair. Mostly in smoothness of the interface on the classic side, and the audio stack seemed to be cleaner.. or at least provided a better sound with foobar and the WSAPI output. :) I'll prob try windows 8 much later than usual to do my free time limits.. hehe

The advertising campaign has begun... eight. eight. eight. eight. eight. eight.

Also saw a Surface ad at a bus stop on Huntington Ave. (It was fairly simple and Applesque, though of course it's not fair to give an Apple monopoly on "simple")

Now that it has been out for a while, what is everyone's opinion now?

I found that I still like the desktop changes, but I rarely if ever use "metro" on my desktop. I did end up getting a Surface however..

The "Metro" interface makes some sense on a touch environment, but it is basically still even months later lacking 'apps' to make it more function. It works for me at work, and that's why I bought it... however it became more useful with a 'jailbreak' which disabled the desktop app cert check. :)

I got Windows 8 as a Christmas present. Still haven't tried it out mostly because I need to find a computer I don't use but that would be recent enough, to test it on.

I'm not installing it on my desktop computer at first because I have a negative feeling about it. I never tried it though so I can't judge it right.

So there's this issue where my sound would randomly go to 0. Turns out there's as really stupid DEFAULT setting that "attempts to be helpful" by lowering sound if it detects communication. >_<

Seriously, it took forever to figure out what the problem was as it didn't happen until as of late. I dislike 8 with a passion. It is causing me all sorts of problems on this computer. I'd wait it out, Arisotura. To me, this is just Vista but okay in some cases, worse in a lot others.

I see, more 'features' from Microsoft. >_<

Well, I heard it was lightweight so I'll first give it a try on my laptop I guess. Desktop on the other hand will likely stick with 7 for quite a while.

It is a sound card issue and you will need to update it to fix the issue.
reminds me of when I use windows 7 and I am playing a steam game.
If I have other music playing in the back ground it will lower it automatically to match my games input.
God forbid if I use google voip to make a call, at times windows 7 or 8 should not help when its not needed.

Realtek and creative have nee drivers for the most recent sound cards.

My take on 8, its pretty good on portable computer such as laptop, netbok, tablet or anything compatible.
My microsoft technet subscription kept jamming the discount code in my inboox since late thanks giving holidays.

On a asus seashell netbook at 1.6ghz and currently 1gb of ram windows 8 professional installed in under 10 mminutes.

The metro feel of everything, if i could customize it to the way I do things on my main pc it would work out.

Only reason why I paid for it is to be brought up to speed with ms and too help future clients that might come my way with issues about 8.

http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/k481/MaikuGekidouken/windows8screenshotmtt_zpsc07f1ca6.png

Those of you who have gotten a code from ms, its best you use it now before 2/28 otherwise w8 pro will be 215.00 retail price.
For 14.99 and no hassle with getting a jey from msm its rather worth it all in the long run.

That "feature" is in Windows 7, and probably (but i'm just guess) was in Vista as well. So it's not really a Windows 8 specfic issue. Sure is annoying but not exactly a new problem, and you can at least disable it. :P

From what I heard, Windows 8 isn't too bad as long you just ignore the metro UI. Maybe it's something I grab when I get a new computer, but I don't see a point in upgrading from Windows 7 for the time being, especially with it having mainstream support for two more years (btw Win XP will stop being supported fully next year so if you're still using that, it's time to look into upgrading).
