i'm going to be apartment hunting in a couple months, so i've been browsing on craigslist to see what's available. since finding a good place is mostly about sorting out what you need to have, what you'd like to have, and what you can live without, i was wondering people enjoy the most about where they live right now.

for me right now, it's the fire escape outside my bedroom window and the fact that there's a shitload of trees in this neighborhood. when the weather's nice, i can hang out on the fire escape like a balcony (it overlooks the backyards of the first floor and other buildings). i've also had squirrels hang out on the fire escape when i'm inside. we've had staring contests.

So who wins your staring contests?

My favorite thing about my house is that it's mine. A few reasons:
  • I don't pay rent, I pay a mortgage, so my cost of living is going back into my own pocket for when I sell the house and move versus giving someone else money.

  • I don't need to wait for someone else to come fix something should it break or need attention. I do it myself. For example, at my previous apartment, my dishwasher leaked no less than 5 times. If it were me fixing it, I would have put a new hose on the first time and have been done with it versus having a huge mess to clean up several times before it was fixed right

  • My cost of living is pretty steady. No increase of rent from $700 to $800 the next year, no lease penalty - just sell the house, which I can do for more than I paid for it

  • I can work on my cars at my house, whereas at an apartment it's not allowed (I still did, but I didn't undertake projects this big)

The fact that I live by myself.

I'm close enough to friends (same building) that I have to walk for just a minute to get to them but I still live by myself. I WAS in a two-person dorm room. That.... didn't work out really, what with his coming in at 3 in the morning with a woman to fuck, leave the lights on, and smoke pot. Nonetheless, I don't have to DEAL with that shit cause I gots my own room. It's just a little on the tiny side.

That must have made it unbearable for you, knowing just a room away from you is the thing you desire most. :(

My house? The neighbours. Nicest people in the entire area, hands down. I also like the fact I have a lovely garden and sheds to store anything and everything in without risk.

Same room. Also it's funny you assume that, also assuming I get none, but hey whatever, that's coo'.

The height.
I live on the 10th floor, I could see all the town's new year's fireworks.
It's also awesome when there is lightning, I can see the entire beam.

Ahh, yes. My room is on the sixth story of the tower I live on. It only goes up 8, and I'd love to be on the eighth! The view is really really good for most of the area but.... There's a tree in the way. :( On the bright side I do get to wake up and see squirrels near me, but still. I want to see city stuff.

i do. if i so much as tap the window, those little bastards dart. COWARDS!

another good thing about where i live now is my proximity to the trains. i only have to walk two blocks to get the train to go to work. i had some really cool downstairs neighbors, but their lease was up last month and they moved out. all the more reason to start looking for a place in a neighborhood where more of my friends live.

Decent amount of space, glass sliding door opens to large outside porch, good green space in the middle of the apartment complex, good walking distance to a handful of museums and a fucking battleship.

My apartment is a block away from downtown, and two blocks away from where I work. It's very convenient not having to drive to work. :)

hmm, well i'm living with one of my best friends now, which is pretty legit. the living room in the apartment is a good sized living room, so its nice to not cramp into a small area when guests are over. we're on the third floor, which has its ups and downs (no pun intended)

i guess the other thing i like about it is pretty much all the furniture and things in the kitchen are mine, so when i move out everything is coming with me, and i won't have to buy anything

1. Being able to see green from my window. My neighbors have a huge, lovely garden and something's always in bloom.

2. Five minute walk from the train station.

3. Large kitchen... by Tokyo standards, at least. Most kitchens only have one electric burner and a tiny sink, but mine has two (!) gas burners, an area to cut vegetables and things, and a nice, roomy sink. Unfortunately, having a big kitchen cost me a bathroom sink... but that's getting into the things I don't like about my apartment. >_>

does anyone like electric stovetops? i used to have an electric oven/stove at my old apartment and i can't even count how many omelets, cakes, and other cookable things it ruined. damn things heat the surface they're touching and not much else.

Classic electric is annoying in my opinion, as they take long to heat up and cool down. Ceramic and induction are much better, but I still prefer gas as it is fast and cheap.

If you were dangerous with gas, you wouldn't be posting here now.

And the favorite thing about my apartment is probably the amount of space it as despite only having two rooms and a kitchen. I don't have much more space on my shelves for stuff, though.
