Hi all. For quite a while now I've been entertaining the idea of making open source applications and DLLs for helping people make editors for SNES games. I've made a few items (not released) that I've somewhat lost the motivation to continue working on. The primary reason for this is because I am unsure how many people actually know both SNES ASM and higher level programming languages. It feels like a low number to me, but I could be wrong. I want to be wrong. So here I am polling users to get an estimate of who actually knows how much of each.
All input is welcome, especially in regards to which higher level languages you may know (e.g. I am most familiar with C++ and C#). |

I personally only know a little ASM knowledge, thats really all I need to help me with my hacking and such. Because it's not always the visual looks of the hack that count. |

I know a little bit of both. I was able to get a little bit of hacking going with SMAS back in the day, but I stopped short since I ended up switching to my RO endevers so I never was able to give it the time fully grasp it.
As for the Higher level languages.. I know C/C++, and some other unixy scripting languages. However I don't feel that I have enough skill to consider it anything more than "Some". I am good with reading existing code and debugging/improving but not anything from scratch. I know a lot of people are starting to use C# a lot, but I've never really played with it myself. I think this is a cool idea, and it would help accelerate the creation of other editors by having that library and reference point to start from vs. from pure scratch. Am I the only one profecient in both? That's actually kind of surprising.
I know 6502 ASM in the context of NES hacking inside and out. I also know C#, web development (JavaScript, HTML, CSS, etc), I written a few things in C/C++ (though I wouldn't consider myself profecient now that I've been out of practice for years). I used to know Perl well enough (lol those crazy college years), I can fudge enough Java given a reference book, PHP as well. I've actually have written a good chunk of Reuben as .dll's for reuse in other projects. Not sure how well that works at the moment since I've never had to reuse any of the .dll's lol. |

Posted by DahrkDaiz You spoke too soon . Also, they're somewhat different ways of thinking about software. People that are much more interested in the guts of how things tick would be likely to have a grasp of both. That is, a tinkering mentality. These days especially you can write lots of high level code without ever thinking about what's going on under the hood. Personally, I've really grown to find ASM tiresome, and long for more abstraction when possible. |
