It started quite some time ago when it spontaneously began saying that write protection was enabled. This was often fixed by restarting the system. However, it began doing it more often later on.

Now it does it no matter where I have that little knob on the side of the SD card. I tried with another that I used to have in my camera before I bought a new one for it. Didn't work. I even formatted both cards, copying the stuff off the original 3DS card beforehand. That didn't work either.

Is my 3DS faulty or has the physical lock mechanism on both SD card somehow jammed?

Go into tools, click system and look at which firmware you have ?
If its beginning with firmware v.1xx, have the 3DS updated some.
Once done, restart the system and format the sd card in fat32bit format.

If you still have issues call nintendo tonight for help.

Should I format it in FAT32 even if it's a 2gb SD card?

And it says Ver. 3.0.0-6E in system settings.

Yeah, FAT32 is the goto file system, it won't read much of anything else.

You should also look into doing an update, just in case. I don't know what the current Eurpoean version is, but here in the US, it's 4.4.0-10.

That's about what mine has now. But updating the firmware and formatting the SD card to FAT32 didn't make a shred of difference. Note that I don't use the SD card that was included with the 3DS now.

Yep, version is 4.4.0-10E.

My SD card on my Wii actually was doing this a week or so ago. Check to make sure that the slider lock is in the right place and be careful how you insert the card, because sometimes, it'll trip the switch just far enough to shut it down.

As an example, it's in the same position as the one in this image:

Have a quick read through of this

Find one of these on sale in uk retail shops:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134717

If it still is not working, you may need to get it shipped off for a new sd slot component.

Why would I need to use a MicroSDHC adapter for SD slots?

And I don't live in the UK either. I live in sweden.

I actually did buy a microSD card and adapter for my 3DS, so I can more easily change out the card (just by sliding out the microSD rather than the whole SD card) :)

If you dont want to use microsd cards for your 3ds, find something that works best for your console.
I use microsd as it is easiest on me and my kodak/pantech mobile phone uses it flawlessly with no issues.
Been doing it that way for almost 5 years with my devices. :)

Also just check european market for a good quality sd cards.
If your still having doubts about the system, pick up the phone and call nintendo today and see if you could get some help.

I'm more worried about the fact that people actually use their 3DS' SD cards for anything.

It's not like the 3DS is worth using as a camera or video recorder; the only files you'd ever add to the SD card would be Nintendo eShop downloads (and you tend to get those from, well, the Nintendo eShop... and install those directly to the 3DS, since there's plenty of storage space there); I really can't see any reason at all to use the SD card.

That's no problem. SD cards are cheap, anyway. And I've sent a mail to Bergsala (Ninty's division in sweden) and asked them what to do.

Doesn't games have an upper limit of 2gb on the eShop? Not that they'd reach that size very often, if at all. But still.

You are correct, but take into example new super mario bro 2:

Siliconera has analysed the file and block size of New Super Mario Bros. 2, as well as download speed.

The site reports, “It took 46 minutes and 23 seconds to get New Super Mario Bros. 2. This test was done with a US region 3DS and a US code for the game, which comes out in North America on August 19. New Super Mario Bros. 2 clocks in at 2,725 blocks or 340 MB.”

Take this with a pinch of salt however, as Siliconera hasn’t divulged what download speeds it was hitting during the transfer.

Full retail games as downloads isn’t exactly new to the industry, but it is new to Nintendo 3DS, and could open up to a flourishing marketplace going forward.

http://www.vg247.com/2012/08/07/new-super-mario-bros-2-took-46-minutes-to-download-report/

As you can see the game is roughly about 350.0 mbs, if nintendo felt generous later on at christmas and say put up streetfighter 4 on eshop or final fantasy 3ds game or spider man...
Yeah, you may be actually be greatfull to have that handy, just in case the system craps out on you, atleast you'll have a back up until a replacement system gets to you and your information transfered at ninbendo head quarters.

If anything, if you plan on going for a dlc libary of any many different types of system games from the eshop or even music and some compatibile video it would be nice to have. :)

We'll save that discussion for another topic later on in the month.
If your downloading from a weak wireless network environment such as work environement lobby or home, yes sir, it will be slow at times and you will hate it.

Then again I question why the eshop has been getting somewhat unstable over the past year, "server wise". <_<
