Do you use any of these?
For me they're really useless, because they throw you out of the Internet, so chat clients disconnect. Fun fact, I used to use hibernate but for some reason Windows threw errors and wouldn't wake up from hibernate mode, so I stopped doing it. |

I only use Sleep mode on my laptop when I close the lid for power saving. |

♥55 ✿4838 ★30 I generally put my laptop in sleep overnight, but during the day I usually disable for the same reason regarding chat clients... (unless I'm taking it out of the range of the wireless) it seems kind of pointless to disconnect and reconnect if I'm just going from one part of the house to another, after all.  |

I have no use for either. I used hibernate while in college on a laptop if I wanted to save what I was doing as the battery life was... crap. The world could always use more heroes! |

I always hibernate my computer. I have several programs open, as well as browser tabs, and I'd be too lazy to reopen it all every day. Not to mention youtube tabs that automatically play as soon as they load, youtube cacophony is fun  (even more with a silly sister that laughs at what you listen to)
I got used to hit the power button to hibernate it. I have to do it that way because for some weirdass reason the little menu in the 'Stop' button won't list 'Hibernate'... may have to do with the ATI driver. I use the sleep only on my Macbook Pro. That's rare too. I disable it on all my windows machines, and usually don't use a Linux distro that has sleep/hibernate default on.
I've found that other than in OSX it ends in failure most of the time. I usually leave my my desktops running all the time locked, or powered off. I just don't see the need on a desktop anyway. (except what  Acmlm said.. a power fail situation with a UPS about to be drained.)

Sleep mode is easier on a computer than a hard boot. |

I never use Stand-by (XP) / Sleep (W7), I find no benefit in it since my screen just blanks after 10 minutes, which makes for a much faster resume. For the same reason I don't use Hybrid Sleep (W7) either.
I find Sleep (XP) / Hibernate (W7) very useful though. Usually I just shut down at night, but if I am still busy with something lengthy (video processing / fractal rendering) or an important document, I just push my power button and it hibernates. I don't do this too much because SSD's don't like long sequential writes (even though they are very fast in it). If your computer crashes on either of these suspend modes, you need better drivers for your hardware. ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

I tend to use suspend (same as hibernate I think) in Linux a whole lot on my desktop when I go to bed/leave it for a longer perid of time.
On Windows (on my laptop), I never use either. |

These are features I only use on laptops. My desktops stay on, all the time.
For my work laptop (a Dell Latitude E6400) I will hardly ever use Hibernate, only if I know I am going to turn it off for very long periods ( more than 3 days), otherwise I simply use Stand By (sleep mode), as it will last several days without power in that mode. Stand by is more reliable for me as Hibernate more often than not gets corrupted.. For my MacBook Air, it sleeps when I close the lid, and also lasts several days in that mode. However if it is about to die out it is smart enough to hibernate itself. I don't need to worry about losing stuff at all (and the hibernate has never corrupted on me). Best thing I like about it is the near instant connection back to the Wi-Fi network thanks to that SSID/DHCP caching thing or whatever it does. So yeah, Stand By/sleep for me on portables, faster "boot" time and it is reliable. |

My netbook gets back on the WiFi almost instantly too, there's probably a driver issue with your PC laptop, which can cause the corruption as well. Driver quality is important. Apple products usually get away with it easily, because Apple decides all your internal hardware for you, and you can make no modifications. For PC's, anyone can buy cheap, low-quality, exotic hardware from many budget brands. These often have unsigned drivers. This is where Microsoft's WHQL driver signing program comes in; one of the things it does is make sure hardware can resume from the deeper halt states. ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

If I have to go to sleep while I am in the middle of something important, I use hibernate.
