I just downloaded Majora's Mask for Virtual Console, and saw that I only have 600 blocks left on my internal memory, and I have a laundry list of games I want to get not only for VC, but Wiiware. From what I saw, the system won't allow you to move your downloaded games to an SD card.
My question is this: Can I expand my usable memory for downloadable games, or do I have to keep cycling through the games I want to play by deleting, then redownloading when I want to play them again? |

Posted by TreliorWhat is your firmware version? With the latest, I have no trouble moving my WiiWare to my SD card and running it from there. ____________________ I don't give a flying feather |

As I've found out: The shopping channel kicks you out if you don't have the latest firmware. I have no trouble with that - I download straight to my SD card and then launch to from SD (Although it has to copy to a temp space on the internal memory to launch it in reality) Also, does the Wii even recognise the SD Card? I know it doesn't recognise all of them. The world could always use more heroes! |

Yeah, it recognizes my SD card. It's an 8GB FAT32 SanDisk I use in my DSi for music. I also have an 8GB SanDisk microSD in my r4 Gold, a 4GB Kingston microSD in my r4i, and a 2GB SanDisk microSD in my phone that it will read just fine using my adapter.
It let me move my save data for my physical games to it, but wouldn't let me do anything with my Wiiare data, since I tried to move my Megaman 9 data. |

The only restriction on save moving I know of is for WFC-enabled games. Should be able to move the channel data though..

I tried again with my SD card. I moved a bunch of random shit around between the system and the SD. It let me move Super Mario Kart, Paper Mario, and Megaman 10 as far as game channels, and the saves for all of my games, except Megaman 9 and 10... Which confuses the hell outta me. |

I don't see the point in moving save data anyway.. other than to maybe create a backup copy.
If you try to run a channel from SD, it'll always load the save from the Wii's internal memory. I also don't know what games have a no-move/copy flag assigned to them in terms of save data at least. :/ Tried launching any of the games straight from the SD card? Not yet. Since I don't have an SD card dedicated to the Wii, I don't want to take the cards out of the devices I use them in, I haven't done anything beyond a little bit of experimenting.
Moving the save data is nice for going places you know also has a Wii, so you don't have to carry your own. Although, I think there may be a data flag in Wiiware/Virtual Console channels that assigns them to the system they were downloaded to originally. I'll have to test that with my brother, Justin's Wii. |

Posted by Trelior There isn't so much a flag, but an encryption key. I know that one due to trying that myself. Save yourself a little effort. The world could always use more heroes! |

I figured as much. Hell, I experimented as far as doing a file check on my laptop. The SD card's directory within the automatically generated Private folder was split into Wii and DS folders. The DS folder, of course, only had my specifically encoded music (which is retarded, why not just let me use .mp3 >:/), and the Wii folder was split into three sub-directories, two were empty and the third just had a content.bin in it.
I assume the binary file contained my Majora's Mask channel, since it was my test subject. |
