So, Sony seems to be teasing that there will be PS4 details soon.

I wonder what they're planning? I was commenting on twitter earlier that it seems like to compete in the modern market all the consoles will need some sort of gimmick- Wii U has the gamepad, Xbox Whatever will probably have an improved Kinect...

Really I do wonder if this is the twilight of console gaming as we know it.

From what I read I've noticed a few trends and read a few rumors on Sony...

Sony is really investing it's efforts into next-gen Hidef TVs. The so called "4K". They even have developed this tech for the PS3 that they will expand upon that allows two people to see two different screens on the same TV. They do this by having active 3D glass run at different refresh rates. I can see them using this a lot provided 4K is even reasonable in the next 5 years.

The next trend is second screen. I am sure Sony will come out with it's own version to compete with the Wii U and Smart Glass. We'll see if they do, and if they can split themselves from the other two offerings in some way.

Also as a footnote I did read something about them acquiring a game streaming company. So they may incorporate that in some way in the PS4.

None of these are really creative so there may be more in store from MS and Sony.. . .... .?

Edit: We may just find out Feb 20th! lol

Erm, "next-gen" would be the right wording as current gen is PS3. :v

I still think of the PS3/Xbox 360/Wii as the "next-gen" consoles, leave me alone :<

Regardless of what you call it, we still have to hear from MS. Here are some of the rumored specs. I also read it will be an Intel x86_64 chip. Could be interesting in the mod department if so..

The original Xbox used an x86 chip, and obviously Microsoft has plenty of experience coding for them, so it wouldn't surprise me that much...

As for mods, though, it seems like everything will be more and more locked down than last-gen... (which continues the usual trend)

Here is something interesting from Kotaku today. Apparently this is the "PS4 Controller" (looks a bit chunky)

The touchpad sounds like a feature that won't get much use, honestly. :P I'll be generous and attribute the chunkiness to being pre-release hardware, though.

Oh, joy to the day when everyone finally stops stealing ideas from Nintendo...

If it works and isn't sealed tight by a billion copyright laws, then use the fuck out of it until the market is sick of seeing it. If we're going with "stealing from Nintendo", that's been going on for YEARS. Play Station exists cause of a failed agreement with Nintendo that ended with Sony taking specs and making their own console (though they also got help from Sega). And Nintendo solidified the idea of home consoles again after the crash, but Sega and others didn't really STEAL I guess, since the Atari...

But whatever, I'm not really pissed off about other companies using innovation from Nintendo. I DO hate their advertisement policies about them, though. Usually completely ignoring the fact that Nintendo exists, or in Sony's case, flat out calling it a piece of shit for kids then USING IT A FEW YEARS LATER. That is retarded to me.

.....I hope those paragraphs made sense. I'm very tired.

I mean, to be fair if the touchpad is what rumors say it is, it's actually a very different concept from the Wii U- you won't have a screen, so it'd be limited to gestural input I guess. (I don't see how useful that would be in most cases, but maybe if I had a Vita I would get it?)

I'm more interested in the new indie consoles coming out than the next XBox or Playstation. I actually have an Ouya preordered and I'm going to port my games to it.

They do sound interesting, but I worry if they catch on at all they'll just end up being phone shovelware... ON TV! with the usual "a few gems among piles of manure" effect.

Since I'm mainly a PC gamer, next-gen for me means that games that are ported amongst all platforms would at least pressure my computer a bit more. Though there are already a few games that uses more high-res and high poly assets on the PC port than other versions to take care of the additional horsepower (Far Cry 3 and Skyrim comes to mind).

Sony will probably still hype about their next-gen consoles being used as supercomputers or something as usual (for that matter, PS3 has been considered pointless to run anything processing intensive for years now, your average cheap 50 usd gpu does a way better job now). Sony kinda screwed up the current generation of console, though they did somewhat mend it in the end and have allegedly passed x-box 360 sales now?

The Touchpad thing I'm eh. Touchpads were kind of cool when the DS used it as few people had a handheld with touchpad save for people with PDA's. Nowadays it's pretty much everywhere thanks to smartphones and isn't as novel anymore (I see this reflected in Nintendo's advertising with the less emphasis on touch). I can see it work if it's combined with a LCD display, but it would also make the controllers more expensive.

Wii U is something I want to pick up at some point for the 1st party Nintendo titles. For everything else, I honestly tend to find on PC anyway.

I'm curious about Valve's SteamBox too, which will be basically be a "easy to use" PC, probably a nice hybrid between the console and PC scene, with hints towards it would be basically a "open" platform meaning that anyone could make their own. So far Big Picture mode for Steam and Steam Linux are two things that came out of the Steambox thing. Linux is far preferable for Valve to use as a base as it saves them license costs, at least that is my suspicion seeing how much they're pushing Linux right now.

This generation of consoles have been unusually long so they all have been way behind tech wise. When Wii was first released, not having HD wasn't a big deal as just a few enthusiasts had it, now nearly everyone have a HD LCD TV at home, and SD CRT TV's are good as dead nowadays.

That problem plagues all the most popular or decent ideas.

Microsoft's Kinect for the x360 was a great concept, but it instantly got a fair bit of shoveled stuff thrown on it.

I'm more curious as to what Microsoft are going to do for their next console. Hopefully, it won't make things like Kinect a requirement. Screws bedroom gamers like myself. :|

If they require it I imagine it'd mostly be for the microphone component rather than the movement component... though even that I'm not really thrilled about. :P (Who wants to talk to their electronics all the time?)

It'd be fun if it detected people cursing their game, and having the game tell them off for doing so.

Even though I am mere minutes from the PlayStation event that is said to reveal the PS4 as of writing this, what effects do you think Japan's superstitious fixation on the number 4 is going to have on the name of the new system? I mean, do you really think they'll go with Orbis?

It looks like PlayStations have generally been named in English, so I wonder if the 4 will be as much of an issue (that is, it wouldn't be the "PlayStation Shi" anyway)...

Orbis doesn't sound that crazy, though, considering they already named a console "Vita"...
