Another necrobump!
I've been working on videos again lately. In the past two weeks, I've put up three videos and I think they're worth sharing. Let's Race Mega Man 9 Let's Race Metal Slug and I linked the races because MM9 is an hour and a half and Metal Slug is 45 minutes. As for my let's plays, I'm still undecided on how to get back into the scene. Part of me really wants to redo my old projects with my improved know-how on video production because my old LPs didn't do the games any justice at all. Another part of me wants to start with an all new series. My friends aren't any help on making a decision... They all say "Do whichever you feel is best." The problem is that I don't fucking know which is the better option! |

Posted by Trapster What do you want to know?
If it's easily emulated (NES, SNES, GB, Genesis, etc) use an emulator and screen recorder. I use Camtasia to record my screen since it grabs system audio and mic activity at the same time, which makes editing a breeze since I don't have to sync audio. For a modern console, use a capture card. You said you have a Dazzle, right? You can make it work if you use the right software. If you use VirtualDub, you can tweak things more accurately than, say Pinnacle Studio or Sony Vegas. Using composite cables causes interlacing, though, but VDub has a deinterlacing filter that works fairly well.
It's not just Top Man that was running fast in that case. The whole game was. The US/Japan and Europe/Australia use different video standards. The US uses NTSC, which runs at 30fps; as opposed to Europe's PAL, which runs at 25fps. It may not seem like much, but there is a noticeable difference.
I can't say I've ever had that problem... All three of my controllers (Logitech, PS3 sixaxis, and a third party PS3 controller) all seem to work just fine.
Does the video do this locally, or is it specifically Youtube's copy? It's kind of hard to troubleshoot without knowing. If it's local (the original file that was uploaded) something happened during the rendering process that needs to be fixed. If it's on Youtube's end, then something probably happened during the upload. I've noticed some of the test videos I've put up had some weird artefacting that was caused by corruption during the upload. I've since switched to using the secure uploader (looks the same, but uses https secure protocol) and the videos go up looking the way they do locally.
I'm not 100% certain, but it may be an issue with Vegas itself. I stopped using it when it refused to register my videos as anything other than a blank puke-green single frame. I edit with Camtasia Studio 8 and Adobe Premiere CS6.
No biggie. This post is much larger. |

Posted by TrapsterPosted by TreliorWell...correction of audio-sync issues and possible video-errors that can occur. Minimizing performance problems while playing the game. Good settings to use, etc. Desync happens in capture when video frames are dropped and audio frames aren't (the opposite is possible, too, albeit much rarer). One way to fix it is to use either a lossless (Lagarith is great) codec or one that compresses at a rate that doesn't sacrifice quality for low bitrate (XVid isn't too bad for this). As for performance problems... If you're recording a PC game, you could try lowering the graphical settings or disabling flashy things that aren't necessary. For emulators, I'm not too sure since I've never had any performance issues during play that didn't happen under non-recording conditions. The only thing I can think to do is to use a smaller resolution for the emulator to allow your machine to focus more on the capture than spending resources on drawing the large window so much. You can always scale up in post with surprisingly little to no quality loss. Using your Dazzle, you're going to want to have a splitter on the video wire to have the system simultaneously send signal to the computer and the TV so that you can play without the delay on the picture caused by the device compressing the data to be captured (Before you blame the Dazzle for that, it happens no matter what device you're using). Posted by Trelior I could believe the opposite is true... The black bars are there because the game doesn't fit the Dazzle's capture area. If you look at my MM9 race, you can tell there's a frame around both player's videos since the PS3 makes the game use a resolution lower than standard 480p definition. If you use Camtasia Studio to edit, you can alleviate that by using Zoom and Pan to zoom in on the video and fill the whole frame. You can even use that to spoof 720p HD. [snip] Posted by Trelior Yep, sounds like Vegas is fucking it up. Posted by Trelior I use Camtasia 7's screen recorder, too. It works nicely. I use Camtasia Studio 8 for editing because it adds a lot of features that are much nicer to use. Not to mention that it allows compiling video-in-video much better than in older versions. Both races were edited and produced in Camtasia 8, then ported into Premiere for the music since Camtasia (both versions) don't seem to handle mpeg sound files properly. |

Posted by TrapsterPosted by Trelior Are you combining the videos with their raw versions or the compressed edits? Vegas seems to have issues when you import .mp4 files. |
