I currently need to double my productivity or else I'll be forced into a situation where I cannot complete all of my obligations.

What are some ways to increase productivity?

Personally, my biggest problem is not being motivated enough to do the work- usually I can do the work I've been assigned without too much issue, but I have to motivate myself to sit down and do it, and not immediately give up when it requires thought. Since I tend to spend most of my "wasted" time on the internet, blocking myself from websites (I do this through self-control, but I think there are plugins out there for web browsers) and chat programs until the work is done (or has begun in seriousness- smaller goals can be motivating as they make it seem more reasonable) can help here.

Additionally, I've found that writing more and then having to clean things up at the end is generally faster than being careful and cautious in writing and thinking everything out- usually nowadays when I do problem sets I accumulate a lot of wasted paper, since I just will write any direction that makes sense when solving a problem- doesn't work? Throw it out and start over. Of course, I imagine whether this strategy works or not depends on how your mind goes about solving things.

What a coincidence. Aaron Swartz's blog post on improving productivity was just on the HN frontpage within the last couple of days. It might be useful.

Morale.

Speaking from experience, this can have a massive effect on productivity. You need to feel good. Kironide, I know you to be an extremely intelligent person, and you should credit yourself a lot more for your efforts. Put your life goals in front of you. Your accomplishments. Hell, look at the salaries and incomes of the individuals who were in the line of education you're in. You deserve it for your hard work, and you shouldn't forget that that's why you are where you are, and you shouldn't forget that its going to take more hard work to get to your destination. But also treat yourself once in a while. Spending money and time on certain frivolous things is much more beneficial to you than the money and time itself. Because it makes you happy. Because you want to keep doing those things.

Also I realize my mood avatar is extremely ironical and isn't helping much but it's all I have...

Hmm. I've noticed that when I listen to fast music (metal, techno/trance or game music, any kind really) I might do things faster. Or music that just pumps you up.

Maybe it could help motivate you if you listen to music you like.

Oh yeah, this is definitely something I do...

One thing I've noticed though is that I can't really focus on working while listening to music in a language I can understand, though, since my brain keeps trying to focus on the lyrics.

Moral yes. The more up beat and confident you are the more work you'll be able to do.

On top of that I would say take small breaks and if you can alternate the project you are working on. If your brain gets stuck the best thing to unstick it is to work on something else, than come back. (Not to mention staring at the same thing for too long decreases effectiveness.)

The other thing I would suggest is not to get frustrated. If you get to a point where you are, just walk away for a second. 20 minute break is more useful than a hour beating the same dead horse.

I too find that's the case. I tend to listen to mostly Japanese lyric or instrumental music for a similar reason.

I find that it helps to have songs which aren't heavier on vocals than the actual music.

Yeah. I however do have many that are heavy on the vocals. To me it doesn't seem to have much of an effect. It is regardless about the music itself.
