I think adding could be a possibility seeing how we have groups and even if Kafuka doesn't use subforums, some people may want to use subforums. I have plans to make it where you don't really lose much info and seeing which ones are NEW should be fairly simple.
I thought I'd bring this up now for when the time comes for a revamp that this might be implemented later on. Flexibility is in mind and I or this site might not use it but others like it. Todo or not todo? |

Going to add a caveat... It should be able to be transparent. IE: You click or link to a category directly, but when you look at the main forum page you can still see all the forums. I like the idea of categories used as subforums, and I like the idea of allowing hosted forums to have a direct link to there category. but we should still see all categories on the main page. So mine is Yes with caveats. (I actually need the ability to show just a category's worth of forums is wanted for 2dudes1RO's main site)

Yeah, a system of being able to toggle forum categories on the main index would be nice. Didn't AB have a feature like that at one point or am I thinking of a different board? Maybe.
And yeah, categories would be merged into forums and forums would have a flag that shows it should handle like a category, forum, or subforum. `status` would probably be the name of it. While I am not too found of having main categories linked, it may have some use if you have an entire private section of forums. There might also be a time where you might want a category to also have a subcategory. Flexibility is key so I'll work around any feelings of main categories and such and make them all behave like you might expect. While I am on it, do you like the idea of having the forum's description on the thread listing in a forum? It could be useful. Maybe there's additional things that show while viewing that forum such as "quick" rules? Don't want to make it too bloated but it is a thought. And here's a somewhat related topic: thread descriptions. Sometimes a thread description could be useful if you want to list a few more details. Might have an option to show that by default and a click to read it since some might not want it making the listing too long. |

Not as of now to paragraph #2 Too much clutter.
#3 I'm more open to but like you said it has to be optional and something you can disable as a user, and board wide. I would like categories to remain how they are visually and functionally with the exception of collapse/ignore, the ability to just show one category by either clicking it's name, or using a direct URL. If we do sub forums I want it to look exactly like the board is now but with just those forums in it visible. I really am not a fan of forums in forums. Isolated Categories AS forums I am for.. Yes it does. Good, I got confused on what you wanted. I want it basically the same but with col/open and just a forum listing forums within it if it has been set. Otherwise, you would notice nothing new with them. 
Sounds like we both have the same plan. |

Up and each Cat (meow) can act like it's own forum set if linked. Like for example
index.php?cat=1 would basically give you category one by itself. You mean have the ability to optionally link them? Because that would be changing the design as you need to have the names linked versus right now where they aren't.
So it is that plus the toggling categories along with subforums you want? Edit: Hover over the links near subforums.

I would go with something different than how you have the '[on]' I would but a + or - on either the left or right.. but that's just me..
Optionally linked as it it would be it's own page so yes you would need to change it so it only shows that cat as a forum listing.. Like you would see with index.php?cat=1 you would get Main (General Forums) - General Forum General forum. Unless a specific forum exists you'll probably find it here. And regardless of the decision I am going to clean up the HTML currently. There's like no </tr> at all in the rows. We discussed this further in the IRC and said we'll just see what more people say.
It isn't needed now but as we develop further we should be able to decide. |

Yeah, I'll be using FF's source check to remove major complaints and whatnot. It will be a somewhat slow process but it will be worth it to see actual good and clean source.
Funny how Xkeeper and BH back in 2007 practically mocked the idea in some posts I found. Probably still do since nothing has been done at their boards. Oh well, some people just don't care. I being ones who mostly do. |
