That's an... interesting question. Huh.

It's actually pretty hard to say because I've changed so much since 2009-- I have no idea what I'd have got into working on. Maybe I'd have found another game to hack... or maybe I'd have come up with something totally different.

I've been sitting here for the past 10 minutes with this reply page open, trying to think of something... and I just can't come up with anything. So I'm gonna go with the utterly boring answer of "I'd be hacking something else".

Not for the past 12 years, but yes.

The first computer I ever used (in 1998) had a 15-inch CRT at 640x480. I think it could actually do up to 1024x768, but the computer was shared with my mom and she thought anything bigger than 640x480 made things too small.


And nowadays we have 4.something-inch displays at 1920x1080 in phones. That's over 9 times the PPI of the aforementioned configuration. Isn't modern technology crazy?!

I just released the Newer source code a few days ago. I was hoping it would help push things a bit further. Unfortunately, it... doesn't :(

I'd probably do it for a pretty small amount. I mean, logging in and copy and pasting a post into the new thread box is not exactly the most difficult thing ever.

I think I did at some point in the early 2000s. I remember Netscape 6 being released, and never being able to use it because it was ridiculously crashy... but I did like using NS4, so there's that.

I've a computer here that I am supposed to install Linux on (because Windows has "weird performance hits that boggle down the machine completely..."). I've attempted to use the SSD as a cache as in the previous configuration, but of course support for that is brand new so finding distributions that actually do have the newest kernel is next to impossible and even if, trying to get it to work is... yeah.

So I've been told to try it without the SSD. Do you think it's a good idea, or will performance take a too hard hit? This thing is supposed to serve as a virtualization server, so...

Hm... I admittedly haven't really dealt with SSD caching. Or virtualisation servers >>;; so I'm not quite sure how qualified I am to answer that.

I'm running Arch Linux on a computer with no SSD right now (though I'm considering getting one at some point in the future), and performance is... okay. Could definitely be better. But it's a three year old computer, my hard drives are full of junk, and I only have 4GB RAM...


Arch does have the latest kernel, and it's a pretty good distro if you're willing to get your hands a bit dirty, but I... don't know if I would recommend it in this case-- it kind of requires you to be an active sysadmin and update often and all that and sometimes fix issues if they come up.

Eh... last time I had my friend install the server via ssh (woo for ultra-laziness), and at the end he had the problem that some kind of /sys/ folder didn't create and couldn't be manually created either, so he kind of hit a roadblock there.

Now I've been wanting to try it myself. Who knows if I will fare better.

... ouch.

In that case, I'd probably give it a shot in a VM first just to test my procedures - that's how I became comfortable enough with Arch to install it as my main OS.

(I even managed to get it dual-booting with Windows without nuking anything-- I went as far as setting up an equivalent setup inside my VM, including a Windows install, so I could check I was doing everything right. Over-the-top? Maybe a bit...)
