Your country must be weird. I have not heard anything like that from the rest of the world.
A lot of other countries have two pin plugs too. We have three pin.
Also, a quick search leads to:

We don't have anything like that at all. So yeah, the degree of confusion was pretty high there.

Of course, the problem with those is, if something other than a lamp is plugged into it, you may spend a while wondering why it won't work. Happened to me at my parents'. Eventually I just taped the offending switch to the ON position. Hee hee.

Well, we do have three prongs here... (sometimes)

If you have a switch on each outlet, does that mean the outlets are more accessible there? Since a lot of stuff here is designed basically to be plugged in and forgot about.

Oh, you have them right at the switch? The ones I've seen have it at the entrance to the room. Making it even more baffling when something doesn't work because its switch is off.

Here (USA) there are 2 and 3 prong outlets. Some older places, like my old apartment building, only have 2-prong outlets, which is annoying when you need to plug in something with a 3-prong plug (like a computer).

Not always. Depends how you place your furnishings. I personally cannot reach the wall outlet for my PC, so I use a strip with individual switches to compensate.

Also, I rarely hear anything about people electrocuting themselves over here.

All the power strips I've seen just have one switch for the entire strip.

I've seen the individual style before, but they're not common certainly...

Well for one, the cables do tend to be heavy, and plugging them in, especially blindly, is quite a challenge. But it's supposedly a very safe system, so...

US power outlets look like this:

They're almost always in pairs like that, too. To me, European outlets look huge in comparison.

To me they always have that "shocked face" expression in them.

I don't know how large they are since there's no size comparison or anything.

Here's one with a ruler for comparison:

The first and third ones are the most common. The second and fourth apparently accept some weird kind of plug I have never seen.

Doesn't seem too different from European ones, at least to me. Maybe it's just the impression that made European ones look so big?

I'm probably the only person here who has both types of plugs, because of where I live. We have British outlets (with switches!!!11) but a lot of the cables we have have European plugs on the ends, which is... fun to deal with.

I have a rather amusing setup next to my computer right now: An outlet with two sockets. One has my computer connected directly to it; the other has an European power strip connected using a 2-pin to 3-pin adapter.

Said power strip has the following connected:
- European tablet charger
- European AC cable for monitor
- British 3DS charger, using adapter
- British powerline network adapter, using adapter

And yet it all works. Somehow.

I'd post a picture, but I'm lazy >_> <_<
