So, I could've sworn there was already a thread about Newer here... but I guess I'm getting mixed up with another board :p Better late than never, anyhow!

Newer is a full hack to NSMBW that aims to feel like an official sequel to the game, while not being made by Nintendo. It was worked on from December 2009 to June 2013 by me and a bunch of other people.

Some features:
  • 128 levels, over 9 worlds plus various secret areas
  • SMW-style connected world map (and lots of other SMW throwbacks)
  • New enemies, bosses, tilesets, backgrounds, music, menus, ...
  • Hammer Suit from SMB3
  • 1-4 players supported
  • I worked my butt off on this, that means it must be great (right?)
  • Took so long to develop that it actually came out *after* Nintendo's sequel

Some screenshots (click to enlarge):

If you're still curious, there's a trailer video, a bunch more screenshots, and previews of worlds 1, 2 and A on the website. There's also tons of LPs on YouTube (or so I'm told). But playing it is more fun, right? :p

Check it out: http://newerteam.com

The official download works with Riivolution (a homebrew app that allows you to apply game patches while running the game off a real disc). There may also be ways to get it running if you can't use that for whatever reason...

The code behind this is now open-source too, including the map editor, game code patches and other tools: http://github.com/Treeki/NewerSMBW

Well I tried it the other day, but my wiimote's battery began leaking acid.
I have spent money on batteries so I can keep playing, so it must be good!
