Well back then layouts weren't auto-updating so you could easily do that. (At least, by default they weren't, you could set it in the options IIRC and then you could get some unexpected results...) |

Yeah. That's a point.
I think that got removed for the purpose of storing less data in the posts table. Since post layouts will quickly fill up the space.  Although.. they didn't store edits as individual revisions back then either..The world could always use more heroes! |

It would be tied with the layout. Layouts on AB1 are snapshots of the person's layout and stored in the post. That means all the &tags& get rendered and put in the layout.
AB2 just uses what is in the user's profile. That means the &tags& will always show the current values. Yeah, AB2 is the only one (as far as I remember) who has any kind of revision storage.
