Scientific Nicole answer: We will take as a case study the 1985 discontinuation of the Arborway Line. Service from Heath Street to Arborway Yard was provided by Presidents Conference Committee cars measuring 46' long. The average MBTA bus at the time was 40' long. (Service on the replacement bus route is now provided by 60' buses, but we'll ignore that) We therefore confirm that 1.15 length-normalized trains can not beat 1 length-normalized bus.
Meanwhile, service north of Heath Street, which remains to this day, was provided predominately by Type 7 trolleys that are 72' long. Therefore we can confirm that 1.8 length-normalized trains can in fact beat 1 length-normalized bus. Therefore, the answer to your question is ~1.8 trains can beat one bus. |
