People around me, such as at school, love to refer to pound sign\number sign as "hashtag" because it's called that on Twitter. It annoys the fuck out of me. And unfortunately, Twitter is now more popular than Facebook so I hear more often. >:[

Who else here is annoyed by the accursed "hashtag"?

I hate when every word becomes a hashtag.

I also call the "#" symbol just "hash" and nothing more.

A pound sign for me is £.

Me!

I use Twitter semi-frequently but I never use the #. Then again I just use it to talk to friends.

I call # the octothorpe or the number sign. Not a pound sign because that is £.

Telephones call it a pound sign for some reason. Same with using "star" for "asterisk".

I think it was originally called a "hash" on Twitter but "tagging posts" or something turned it into the hashtag.

Calling it a hashtag when it's not being used as one just seems silly. :P

Back in my day, we called # the number or pound sign... although even back then, I wondered what # had to do with weight :P (this was before I knew of the £ currency, too)

I have occasionally seen # used to indicate weight by doctors and the like. I always thought of it as "number" though, like #1 for "number one".

Hashtags work great on Twitter when you want to promote something or being silly. Yes, they can be annoying, but there is a bright side.

For instance, I use hashtags to promote my book as well as my geek website. It is a great way to promote and educate others about your product.

Then there's the silly hashtags. I use those sometimes on Twitter but more on Tumblr. But on Tumblr, its more of a tag than a hashtag (yes, there is a difference).

The pound sign found on phones. I still call it that.

Number sign is when the # is used in front of a number.

All three suck and I wish they would just die already. If they are still around in 10 years I won't be on the internet anymore.

Agreed.

# is a pound sign and should stay that way. All social media should stop encouraging #zomg trending worldwide selfies garbage. As if Facebook wasn't already enough.

Yep. I hate those damn things.

Me, what I find annoying is when people post pics of their food before they eat it. Um, OK, so you eat just like all the rest of us. Big whoop.

Anya, please don't shoot me *hides*

Looks more to me like you're talking about Sofi. Don't think I don't remember seeing all those food pictures she posted on Jul. Honestly not much of it looked very tasty, I have to admit.. :P

Actually...I wasn't thinking of her at all. Honest.

The general trend just bugs me.

Well as soon as I read that, it's the first thing that came to my head. I don't like it either really. Keep your food to yourself, I don't want to see what you ate. :P

If I like how my food looks, I'm going to take a picture of it. Must be the part of me that actually likes my job as a cook. Which I find strange to begin with. O_O

If I do it, I just want to make people hungry. I know I'm guilty for it at least.

I haven't done it in awhile, but I think when I did I was generally trying to show off something I cooked and though I did a good job at >_> Which doesn't seem unreasonable.

Restaurants are a different story, except if there's something significantly noteworthy about the meal that's worth posting.

Yeah. Home cooked moments of pride are good.

For a restaurant thing. I might post "omfg, that drink is huge!" type pics at most.. or if it was something special.

Well, getting a proposal with a ring presented with the meal might be cute enough to post.. right?

I don't cook.

Well, I prepare food in the toaster/oven/microwave, but I don't cook from ingredients.

I still wonder why people actually say for anything. Like if you say, "Let's have a pie contest", people wil say "hashtag pie contest". Oh my God! Real life ain't Twitter. >_<
