Haha. You can't learn them. Also Kawa, have you ever tried entering regexes in the Windows command line? That is one of the worst methods of torture on this world. |

I have no CLITs that take regexes, as far as I know. If I do have them I never had a use for them. |

Regex is something I use time to time, but never fully understood. I need to take my time to learn it properly.

No idea about Windows ME, and I know that Windows 2000 and Windows XP used a textmode based installer. When I first installed Linux, you had to download floppy disk images over dialup (at least I did). Slackware sets A, AA, and D I got first. That was enough to get online with console only, and to build programs. I think I got the N package next so I could use lynx and I had to build ircii-epic3 myself to do IRC while I waited for the large X and XA packages to download. (I don't think it was X is X11, XA (which I think I am wrong on it's label) which was the basic apps and windows managers. (I installed it on a 720MB HD and had plenty of room) I'm glad they went with LiveCD + Install as it takes away a lot of the barrior that exists with the old method. First time I installed Linux it was... fedora core 3 or something I think, and I found it really kludgy even if it was handholding you with GUI installers. You had to use three different CD's for the installer too. I remember thinking that Ubuntu Linux was so clean and bloatfree compared to my former Linux experience. I did try out Slackware and some BSD for fun of it, but neither were that newbiefriendly compared to Ubuntu Linux (I know my way more comfortable in Linux nowadays though so it's not as big concern for me).
Then again back then the red hat distros loved to be multi-CD based as to have everything on the discs. Nowadays they just put on stuff that the average user needs, and anything else you have to download yourself. Gywall: When was the last time? Been awhile since I ran into driver troubles honestly, other than the newest graphics card sometimes don't have full 3D support. But faulty/missing drivers is the responsibility of whoever made the hardware. I recall it used to be common to have problems with getting the sound working, but nowadays that 99% computer users uses a common chipsets rather than a dedicated sound card it's not as much of a problem.

Posted by Ailure Indeed they do, as did all previous versions of NT down to NT 3.1. In the second step (after restarting), a bare-bones version of the operating system itself is used for setting up all the hardware and configuration settings. This was done because up to XP a floppy-based boot-up of the installer was still supported, so a light-weight installer was needed for the first part (XP used six floppies), and trying to boot a bare-bones NT entirely from floppies would've needed an outrageous amount of them. Vista doesn't support floppies for setup so that wasn't an issue anymore. As for Linux... I'd use it if it weren't for the bad driver support that prevents it from working correctly with my PC. :/ |

I gravitate towards Debian-style now myself. Only because I don't have the time like I used to. I used to love building distros from scratch for myself. This is time consuming. Slackware was more of a "here ya go, no real package manager. Find everything yourself". The one I used later on as my main OS (Gentoo in 2005) used a. "Okay here are the tools to setup your distro. You have to do that yourself. Once you are done than our package manager will compile everything for you automatically with dep check and system level optimizations."
I tried to install pure Debian on occasion and well I never did get it fully installed. (tried in 98', '02, and in a VM in '08). No idea why. I've had success with more complex installs like Gentoo. So until Ubuntu, mint, and the more "install and go" type I never did use apt, dpkg and such. I've become quite fond of it now. In fact if I ever get time I'm installing Linux Mint Debian Xfce edition on my desktop. (loved working with it in VMs) PS: Always disliked redhat variants. I guess it comes from the time I started using Linux. it was labeled as a 'sell out' and none of my mentors used it. For me, Knoppix is still the nicest distro to work with.
