I know, debate, blah blah, but still, I'd like to know.

To be honest, I'd use the console but my N64 broke and refuses to start up while my NES is really bitchy. So I'm kinda forced to use emulators to enjoy the old games of my childhood, which is sad as keyboards don't make good controllers.

At least I can still play the old Gameboy though :)

Depends if I have access to the game on one of my consoles or not. Or if the game is a pain in the ass to get.

I will ALWAYS prefer the game. Sometimes I just buy the game, emulatable or not, just cause playing it on the NES or SNES or GBA is way more enjoyable to me. If it costs too much or if I have too little money, I'll just emulate it. Or if I gotta record it.

I've gotten a lot of games like this. Shadowgate, Megamans 2-4, LOTS of N64 games, all that. My classic consoles still work so that's no problem (I got a new NES though, a toploader. My old grey box was unfortunately way too faulty, though it DID still work).

I love playing games on the original hardware... I don't know, especially something like the Famicom Disk System with hard-wired controllers and the click and whirr of the disk...

On modern systems I feel like there's less of a connection to the hardware, but then my computer is not really powerful enough to emulate anyway. :P (The 3DS is of course an exception here, even if it had an emulator, because of that screen)

Of course, emulation has its benefits (screenshots, savestates...), and I don't bring my TV with me to college so it's the only way I can play most console games here.

But given the option, and assuming I'm playing solely for personal enjoyment, then console is pretty much my usual preference.

for older systems i'd rather prefer an emulator because hell if i'm setting them back up, much less finding a good crt to run them on (only way to run an actual console imo). though there are some exceptions, like when someone has bomberman and a multitap. and the required amount of controllers.

though i really should just get an FC twin or whatever those things are. seems like a worthwhile investment

Depends on the game and system for me.

The megaman zero games for example are near impossible for me to play on emulator.

Console. Because I find the experience to be somewhat more satisfying.

Granted, might be the fact I prefer controllers over keyboards.

Funny. It's the opposite for me.

I only have a joypad for development purposes.

Emulators all the way, I don't like gaming on small screens, and joypads nowadays are awesome.
I also love save states and rewinders.

I actually start to think that emulation might be superior for 3D based consoles. Jagged polygons really start to get to me. A quite few N64 games looks surprisingly gorgeous with modern filters and high resolution. To the point that some games like Perfect dark is comparable to most GoldSRC/Quake 3 era PC games. Some early 3D games suffers more from aesthetics than technical quality though such as overly saturated textures (Compare Super Mario 64 with it's DS remake texture-wise).

Kinda funny to thnk that games was too saturated looking. Nowadays it's all "real is brown".

But for low-res pixel-based consoles like NES and SNES, I would prefer the original console and I actually set up my emulators to fake the look of a TV.

If you ask me, those take the fun in challenge out of quite a few games. With that said though, it might be that I prefer to play games as they were designed.

I only try to use savestates and rewinds in situations where I want to see the results of doing something differently or I’m playing with glitches that can crash the game. If I'm playing seriously, I don't use it at all.

Although I found out that way that the Mario Party 1 dice is predetermined through savestates. Timing does not matter at all.

This is a reason I prefer original consoles. I am SHIT at resisting using savestates if they're there, I'll eventually break down and cheat my way through the game. If they're not there, I'll manage through with out them. Like, last week, I sat down and beat Zelda 2 on the original NES. Twice. Without savestates, and without saving (the battery pack is dead on that cart). That makes me feel MUCH more proud, especially since never having beaten the game without savestates before, than if I had just cheated my way through.

It all depends on the system for me.

NES, SNES, Playstation, and all incarnations of the Gameboy are systems I prefer to emulate for one reason or another. Mostly due to lack of availability of games, but also because emulation is actually good for those systems.

N64 and newer stuff like Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox, Wii, and DS are only playable on the real console or a facsimile thereof (in the case of Wii's Virtual Console for N64 games) since emulation either doesn't exist or is beyond dismal shit.

DS is a special case for me, though, since I use my DS to play the games, but they're not the actual game cards. The r4 is a beautiful homebrew device.

Actually Gamecube/Wii emulation is pretty good nowadays, to the point that people prefer playing Skyward Sword on a PC with a Wiimote (it's gorgous on PC as the aesthics of the game plays really well with anti-aliasing filters and high resolution!). I don't have a bluetooth interface for my PC or else I would had tried myself already.

I prefer Emulation. I like being able to play almost anything on one machine. I have had many consoles over the years and they do pile up. Nothing quite beats playing mario 3, Super Mario land 2, Demon Attack, and Quake all at the same time. (Well when I was 15 I could do that. I wish I could find the screenshots from this period. I did to show of X11 to someone)

Right now you still can't get a 100% experience in emulation on most platforms, but in most cases as long as timing is accurate you won't care.

(But I do occasionally pull out the old SNES. [and I was looking at Super Famicom. >_>])

Quake 2 at most.
Sorry but as one who has owned a 16 MB 3dfx Voodoo Banshee I must tell you that Q3A not only had Hardware T&L support, but also a lot of great textures, even when S3TC was enabled. No way this would fit in the tiny video memory of the N64.
I remember the lack of textures and polygons in Mario 64 and OoT really made me want to stay with the SNES for a while.
Perfect Dark, Goldeneye 64 and Conker's Bad Fur Day were good examples of what the N64 could really do.

Just tried running Dolphin to play Wind Waker since I think I will never actually get my hands on it to play on my Wii since everyone who's selling it wants fucking $30 for their copy... Usually one that lacks the case and manual and the disk looks like it's about to snap in two if a single particle of dust falls anywhere close to it. :/

Needless to say, my laptop isn't powerful enough for it. TT.TT

I was mostly thinking in terms of when anistropic filtering and MSAA is enabled. I'm quite sure Voodoo didn't have any of those modern filterings. :P
