At least I can still live with it after enough tweaking and hacking, and I've gotten mostly used to it already, so it won't be all that bad once I'm forced to drop XP >_> (next computer, maybe)
As soon you run out of memory address space you're pretty much forced to. Windows 7 isn't really that bad when you get used to it. The inbuilt search functionality on the start menu is really nice if you gotten into habit of using it. I actually run out of memory addresses on my second last computer, had 3.25 GB of RAM rather than the full 4 GB due to the hardware addresses taking the rest.

Anyway...

1994: 486 Compaq brand (Presario?): Came with Win 3.1, was updated to Win95 at some point. We installed a 2 GB harddrive which felt OMGHUGE back then.
1998: HP Pentium II: I remember this felt like a night and day in perfomance compared to the 486 lol
2002: HP Pentium IV: This became my main computer during the college years, it was basically running at duct tape in it's last moments.
2006: HP With some AMD processor (2600+ maybe): It's GPU and PSU was dying and I was getting sick of Hewlett Packard computers. A bad HD cable made matters worse too, would randomly freeze due to that.
2010: Built my current computer with Intel core i7 2.67 ghz and ATI Radeon 5800 (one of the last cards with the ATI brand before it was dropped in favor of just plain AMD).'

My next computer probably will have a SSD boot disk for speed. When that will be I'm not sure, current CPU's around are too similar in performance of what I have already so I want to wait a little longer. I already had to replace the PSU (*sigh* I seem to have a bad luck with those) and the GPU fan on this computer. Maybe 2014?

I wonder what's more pathetic, Windows 8's Metro, or the new Mac OS X that will turn your MacBook Pro into the memetic $2000 Facebook machine...

Both are objectively pathetic. Which one more so is a matter of opininion.

At least Windows 8 isn't making signing-required-by-default for desktop applications... o_O

Yeah, if I upgrade this machine to Mountain Lion, disabling that will be the first thing I do.

IMO, they may be planning on that. With Windows 8's Metro interface and its huge buttons all over the place, it seems obvious to me that they want to turn your PC into a giant tablet or phone. The signed bootloader thing reinforces this feeling.

Though, I won't speak for sure.

I think as tablet computers gain popularity, companies are trying to mimic it's success by taking elements and placing them elsewhere.

I also doubt it'll be long until most monitors become touch-enabled. I know some people already have them.

Well, Metro programs will be entirely restricted to being purchased through the Windows Marketplace... but I don't see anything about doing so on the desktop (though I also suspect they plan on abolishing it eventually)

With all this talk about modern GUIs being made of suck and bad decisions, let's take a moment to reflect on the past.

A past most of you probably never experienced.

The Apple Lisa.

Don't just open LisaWrite, friend. All that gets you is a (friendly) error message that tells you the Lisa doesn't roll that way. Instead, aim at that "LisaWrite Paper" icon and drag away from it. You now have a working copy named "LisaWrite Paper" with a timestamp appended to it. You don't want that name, naturally, so aim at the name and type away. Don't click, it doesn't work like that -- there's no "rename" mode like on the Mac that came out shortly after. Now, double click your new document to open it in LisaWrite.

Also, to copy those applications (because all I had initially was "Empty folders" -- and yes you can drag new folders from there, Clock, and Calculator) I had to select all the icons on that application's disk, then select Duplicate. The flashing icons that produced could then be dropped onto the ProFile disk. Deselecting the flashing icons would cancel the copy duplication, given a last chance warning.

Strange design decisions. Strange design decisions everywhere.

Microsoft does emphasize the PC will always be an open platform. They will probably go the way of Android with their marketplace, warning you when you want to install an unsigned program.
Don't forget about all those Windows games, the desktop will always be open.
I expect to see ARM binaries for many popular desktop programs, in addition to the x86/x64 binaries we have now.

Have you been following the Building Windows 8 blog? Recent posts claim that the only ARM desktop applications allowed will be Microsoft's (specifically, Office)...

But what's going to stop someone from trying anyway?

I suspect Kiyoshi probably referred to the likely possibility of Windows joining the tablet computer market.. which would be interesting to say the least.

Of course Microsoft wants to encourage all developers to make cross-platform apps in WinRT (Metro), but I don't see why desktop apps should be blocked for ARM only, while you can install them with no problem on x86.
And even though I dislike LibreOffice, it should be given a fair chance.

EDIT: I read up on this and I think I know why it is a wise decision.
The downside is that it will prevent a whole new branch of desktop binaries, effectively preventing ARM from making it to desktop PC's (Intel conspiracy?).
But the most important reason is, you will get all your updates, drivers etc. directly from Microsoft.
Anyone who has ever tried updating an Android device knows why this is a good thing :P

EDIT:Also, all Windows 8 tablets will ship with a clean Windows 8, no Dell/HP/Acer crapware allowed :D

EDIT: lotsa typos, bleh desu

Advertising back then made a big deal out of Apple doing the whole "desktop metaphor" thing. This was toned over a bit over the years, probably for consistency.

I also see that Lisa does not have square pixels, which makes screenshots of it on modern computers either look warped or pixelated.

Why wait? Android is basically just that, and fully optimized for tablets.

Ah yeah, keep in mind however that android is basically the Linux kernel forked though. So it's technically Linux in a way. ;)

Windows 8 on ARM will also have locked bootloaders requiring Microsoft's signature, so that will not be an option. :) (Well, okay, you could just buy an Android tablet, but don't tell Microsoft that)

Ubuntu is also making a pure Linux Tablet OS. Not a fan of unity. It may use Wayland over X11 for the release. Pure Linux tablet has large appeal to me at least.

I'm eagerly waiting for that to get ruled down in court.

Well, it's iffy- I mean, the best-selling ARM tablet of this class at the moment (by far, I think?) is Apple's iPad, so Microsoft doesn't have a monopoly, and the iPad is also locked down...

But on the other hand, Windows is a declared monopoly, so maybe they can't get away with it.

Erf, I hate Unity as it's awkward on the desktop computers. Linux tablets would be interesting, although I have a feeling they would mostly be competing with android tablets.

Besides Windows have done really badly outside of the x86 market. Windows mobile marketshare is small compared to android and iPhone.
