Have you ever always pronounced a word a certain way until you someone said it with the correct pronunciation?

Thanks to the wierd spellings that English words have, this is isn't all that uncommon for people. I know "Acmlm" is a word that people always pronounce differently.

I have many of these words that I once pronounced differently untik I learned the correct pronunciation. Two words of the top of my head right now are "chasm" and "chitin".

I used pronounce "chasm" as "tshazm" rather than "kazm", so I never got the joke that "tsar-chasm" sounds like "sarcasm". As for "chitin", I keep on pronouncing it as "tshittin" rather than "kaitin". I guess the people that discovered chitin pronounced the "cha" sound as "sha" so it would sound like "shittin'" rather than "tshittin" and gave it the pronunciation "kaitin". :P

I did the "tshazm" thing too.

I would pronounce "integer" as "in-TEG-ur" for years. Likewise "integral".

I also struggled a LOT with foreign words, especially French words. ("What's a horse doyoovrey?") I also struggled with Japanese words, especially those ending in E. I would say anime as "ann-ime", rhyming with time.

Related: I thought "debris" (DEB-riss) and "debree" (duh-BREE) were 2 words with the same meaning for the longest time. Then I found out they're one word with a weird pronounciation: "debris" (duh-BREE).

Also, don't know if this really counts...but I always stressed the first syllable of "address" when used as a noun (ADJ-ress). I only use the uh-DRESS pronunciation when I'm using it as a verb (I will address the audience...) Most people seem to use the latter for both.

Oh, another one: I somehow missed that "nearby" is a compound of near and by, so I rhymed it with Kirby.

I still have no idea how to pronounce "genuine".

I remember I had some funny pronunciations for certain words until I learned the correct pronunciation. I don't know which words, though.

Are you looking for a Gen-U-In example? ;)

Myself, I remember saying advertisement as "advertise-ment". :|

I was the reverse of the bunny. I would spell it "advertizement".

I pronouce words that I don't know with what I understand of the pronunciation.

This causes errors here and there, like the example above. >_>

I still to this day pronounce "genuine" as "jen-you-ine" with the "ine" pronounced the same way as in the word "fine".

I prounce "grandeur" as "grandoor" but I've heard "granjer" as well.

Also, I have always pronounced "phenylalanine" as "fenee la la neen". I found out "phenylalanine" is pronnounced as "fenill ei la neen". I ain't pronouncing it as "fenill ei la neen". I will pronounce it as "fenee lala neen", like I always have. Screw the pronunciation.

The jif thing was the creator's 25-letter alphabet.

People are gonna get rid of the G before long. Well.. That's jonna be a jreat pain to spellinj words.

I think the q or k may be replaced. Also, English sometimes uses non-English letters, like "Ñ", "Ü", etc. Although people pronounce "Ø" and "Ö" as "O" rather than like the similar-sounding "oo" in "book".

In fact, that *is* the actual pronunciation of the "Chao" species in the Sonic Adventure series, believe it or not ;)

I used to often misread words, adding nonexistant letters or removing some. For example, for a long time I misread "ecosystem" as "ecoystem" and "college" as "collenge"

I only misread words if I'm scan-reading at a very fast pace (Something like 20 words per second or so?) or if I'm reading horrible handwriting.

I misread things pretty often, but usually figure out that I screwed up just as quickly... my normal reading is pretty much a somewhat more in-depth scanning.

I also misread words. When I was younger, I once misread "enrolling" as "errolling". LOL.
