Posted by AcmlmAs soon you run out of memory address space you're pretty much forced to. Windows 7 isn't really that bad when you get used to it. The inbuilt search functionality on the start menu is really nice if you gotten into habit of using it. I actually run out of memory addresses on my second last computer, had 3.25 GB of RAM rather than the full 4 GB due to the hardware addresses taking the rest. Anyway... 1994: 486 Compaq brand (Presario?): Came with Win 3.1, was updated to Win95 at some point. We installed a 2 GB harddrive which felt OMGHUGE back then. 1998: HP Pentium II: I remember this felt like a night and day in perfomance compared to the 486 lol 2002: HP Pentium IV: This became my main computer during the college years, it was basically running at duct tape in it's last moments. 2006: HP With some AMD processor (2600+ maybe): It's GPU and PSU was dying and I was getting sick of Hewlett Packard computers. A bad HD cable made matters worse too, would randomly freeze due to that. 2010: Built my current computer with Intel core i7 2.67 ghz and ATI Radeon 5800 (one of the last cards with the ATI brand before it was dropped in favor of just plain AMD).' My next computer probably will have a SSD boot disk for speed. When that will be I'm not sure, current CPU's around are too similar in performance of what I have already so I want to wait a little longer. I already had to replace the PSU (*sigh* I seem to have a bad luck with those) and the GPU fan on this computer. With Windows 8's Metro interface and its huge buttons all over the place, it seems obvious to me that they want to turn your PC into a giant tablet or phone. With all this talk about modern GUIs being made of suck and bad decisions, let's take a moment to reflect on the past.
A past most of you probably never experienced. 
The Apple Lisa. Don't just open LisaWrite, friend. All that gets you is a (friendly) error message that tells you the Lisa doesn't roll that way. Instead, aim at that "LisaWrite Paper" icon and drag away from it. You now have a working copy named "LisaWrite Paper" with a timestamp appended to it. You don't want that name, naturally, so aim at the name and type away. Don't click, it doesn't work like that -- there's no "rename" mode like on the Mac that came out shortly after. Now, double click your new document to open it in LisaWrite. Also, to copy those applications (because all I had initially was "Empty folders" -- and yes you can drag new folders from there, Clock, and Calculator) I had to select all the icons on that application's disk, then select Duplicate. The flashing icons that produced could then be dropped onto the ProFile disk. Deselecting the flashing icons would cancel the Strange design decisions. Strange design decisions everywhere. |

And even though I dislike LibreOffice, it should be given a fair chance. EDIT: I read up on this and I think I know why it is a wise decision. The downside is that it will prevent a whole new branch of desktop binaries, effectively preventing ARM from making it to desktop PC's (Intel conspiracy?). But the most important reason is, you will get all your updates, drivers etc. directly from Microsoft. Anyone who has ever tried updating an Android device knows why this is a good thing 
EDIT:Also, all Windows 8 tablets will ship with a clean Windows 8, no Dell/HP/Acer crapware allowed

This was toned over a bit over the years, probably for consistency. Ubuntu is also making a pure Linux Tablet OS. Not a fan of unity. It may use Wayland over X11 for the release. Pure Linux tablet has large appeal to me at least. Besides Windows have done really badly outside of the x86 market.
