I was talking with DJ Bouche and KP that we could possibly start a Kafuka leader board and possbily hold competitions at regular intervals? We could do it as a bracket, or as a accumulated points system. Whatever.

What do you guys think?

I dunno about participating in speed runs, myself, but points/combos and other stuff like that would certainly be fun and interesting.

I'm up for it, although how do you generally organize it and make sure people play fair?

Basically we'll get a set of people. Than we can discuss if we want to do leader board or bracket style (both have their pluses minuses, but the leader board can be done over time if someone can do a run for a while)

Than we'll pick a list of games for how ever many rounds we want. Than we'll sort then randomly so it's fair and hit them one at a time.

We'll need to work out if it has to be run live or best time submitted (Live really is the best way) and.. yeah mario kart style scoring: Points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd. Most points wins the cup! When we get badges working 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will get a forum badge. That start over and repeat or change what works. :)

Thoughts?

I can get behind a system like that. I'm definitely in favor.

As long as there is a variety of games available and not just NES/SNES/GB/N64 games. Where possible, it would be interesting to see what modern games there are that people are good at. (For example, a Super Meat Boy speed run, Cave Story speed run would be interesting to add in).

Not that there is anything wrong with older games, but just to be something different and have more options open to people. :P

I tend to play the game the way I want and never really kept it to achieving the next goal right away, so I'll be prone to just doing whatever the hell I want instead of paying attention to the fastest way possible. Notorious examples are indeed Cave Story and Super Metroid.

As for keeping it fair, I will admit to cheating in a competition just like this. I made a poor decision under pressure. Sometimes competitions have a way of twisting people into something they normally aren't (read: cheater) and they end up facing the consequences. So, streaming live is really the best way to prevent something like savestates/speedups/cheats to be used.

I'm AWFUL at speed running games, but I'd be willing to play :D Hell, I can record it, even if its on the console, so I'd be willing to just for the Hell of it. Count me in.

There's only a handful of games I can speed through.. but might be fun to bite on for a few.

Me too, but it'd be fun to try a few.... What kinda games ARE we talkin' about, anyway?

I'd REALLY wanna speed through weird games that you wouldn't see people really try to speed through as often. Those are the most fun competitively.

I've been racing at Speedrunslive since last summer, and was never much of a speedrunner myself (except TAS) :P They usually race the same few popular games (like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time), but sometimes there's blind races or other random games ... see the list of games I've raced, for example. And most races are streamed live, so anyone can watch (and chat) or make sure no one cheats ...

As for here, there was some talk about racing SMB3 a while ago, and I'd still be up for that and maybe more :)

I'm actually banned from SRL for a few more days. I received a month ban from there for cheating. At SMB3, no less. So, when I get unbanned and try to apologize like 9000 times for fucking up, I'll try and get a stream up so I can race again. Acmlm, I would race you at a bunch of stuff. Probably Mario World too.

Mario 2 race would be interesting since that's the game Acmlm started hacking, with his old SMB2 Discombobulator. Maybe even a Doki Doki Panic run might be interesting.

It'd give me an excuse to actually play it through entirely for the first time in my life :D (I HAVE tried though. Many times, all stories for other days). But SMB2 is awesome fun

I would love to try my hand at a Mario 2 speed run. It's one of the few classic games I feel I could actually compete at.
As far as the method of connection, I propose starting a Kaillera server. I'm not sure what goes into starting a server of that sort, but it could make a good central hub for gaming competitions at the board, and due to Kaillera's structure, possibly attract some new users as well.

Kaillera
I think Kaillera is a worthless piece of shit. Back in 2009 when I tried to do a group LP channel, we used SNES9x with the Kaillera client to netplay... Needless to say we couldn't do recording sessions very long without needing to stop and reconnect because it couldn't keep us synced to save its life.

I've since switched to Hamachi, and never had a problem. I propose we set up a Hamachi server, and have its IP public for everyone to join.

Why would we need Hamachi and/or Kaillera to do individual speedruns? >_>

Is anyone really going to do something like that? Just to have the leaderboard status on this site?

I don't think so, but I'm not the one in charge, so I couldn't tell you the real justification.

As for the leaderboard, I don't see why not. At least in a thread.
