I also have sitting directly above my desk a map of Europe circa 1897, which is similar geographically to today, to my left above my television a world map from 1960 which is more detailed than the globe, over the dining table a reproduction of a 1630 world map that again does feature the British Islands in significant details that a number of smaller islands are visible. Maps that do not include England* are (from left to right) a 1950s map of Manhattan south of 79th street, a map of the Boston Elevated system circa 1938, a 2009 diagram of the MBTA, and a stylized cartoon map of Washington, DC directly behind me. *I am told England and Britain are not synonyms, but US law as well as the 1783 Treaty of Paris require that I not recognize this distinction |
