I like my applications to look like they belong. Let's just say I'd rather use IE6 or even 5 than 11, if it were all about the visual style.

I know it's probably a bad thing but I've gotten used to its new look.

UI consistency has basically died on the desktop these days, especially in Windows- right now I have on this desktop two 'desktop web apps', Chrome, Microsoft Outlook, and an ssh client running irssi-- what is consistency?

Among other things, whatever happened to the "title bars are for holding window titles" rule is a fucking mystery. Windows programs like Explorer or WMP have completely empty title bars (despite having window titles set). All the browsers don't hesitate to put tabs and other shit there, too, which reduces the title bar space available for, you know, moving your window.

Admittedly Firefox gives more titlebar height when not maximized.

There was also that conversation a while ago in #x about driver config panel UIs. Those all compete to have their own fancy styling. Hell, I remember a tech/geek magazine that rated some hardware and their drivers, and for one that actually had a standard UI, it was considered 'stark' and a bad thing somehow.

Well, to be honest, I like it when things have their own personality, but... let's just say Windows doesn't quite enjoy it. Also, it's bad when it looks like crap or doesn't respect established UI rules. Or when it does shit like using the system text color against a hardcoded background color.

In an ideal world, UI styling would work in a standardized way across the OS, so for example a program could use its own UI style without having to hardcode colors everywhere, and you could tell the OS to let the program use its own style or to override it with the OS-wide style for whatever reason (or hell, why not, use your own per-app styles).

But well, Windows isn't known for its legendary UI customization abilities.

Don't get me started on 'desktop web apps'.

Firefox is related to Netscape Navigator, right?

Yep, they are pretty much identical. Using my old Netscape, it told me to install Firefox 2 (which I'm using now)

Cool stuff. It's weird how a browser from 2008 is so incompatible with today's stuff.

Heh, I remember trying to get Windows 3.11 to connect to the Internet back a couple years ago ;) Some sites wouldn't even load (the latest known Windows 3.1x browser dates back to I believe 2000 or 2001)

The oldest operating system I could ever manage to get working was Windows 95. then I failed at getting it on internet and used a disc image/dosbox and not a real VM.

Meanwhile, I make webpages that work perfectly fine on browsers from the 90s.

Reminds me, I should really just tear out the theme from my website and rewrite it from scratch; like, I think at the moment I load a web font that I don't even use, because it's a leftover...

I use a simplistic theme for a reason: compatibility with older computers and browsers ;)

I miss the simplistic look on so many websites. Now it's fancy styling, HD Graphical files and tons of scripts you can break by turning cookies off.

...or breaking it even more by turning scripts off.

NoScript is great, the noscript tag is not. I implicitly said what I think of how people use that tag in one of my previous posts here.

I don't use No Script. I already break the web enough with cookies disabled, I don't need to break it to oblivion.

I use NoScript, but you have to be really liberal with allowing JS nowadays, which I guess defeats most of the purpose...

Not really. Generally (but not always) you can allow the scripts for the website, and block everything from outside. I don't do this if I rarely access a website.

(I use MBAE as a failsafe in case something horrible happens)
