The only addon problem I had in Firefox was when I forced addons that didn't support the current Firefox to be turned on. But that's kinda going towards the "You messed with it yourself, it's your own fault for breaking it" territory, complete with tonnes of warnings to do not do that. And usually it doesn’t totally break the browser so you can still manage to disable the troubling addon. It's been awhile since Firefox last broke plugins between version changes though (between version 3 and 4).

Kiyoshi: Forgot to mention but it's possible to run Firefox 2.x on Win NT 3.5 (which is from the time that the firefox myths page was created). Of course that's not exactly the first OS I would go for.

(His GUI gallery is great, just watch out for his almost near irrational hatred for IE that even I find over the top ).

I have another about another 443 GB unpartitioned on the first drive that I can format for emergencies. I was intended it for other OS's but I admittedly was never assed to install other OS's. Yes I have 2 1 TB drives.

Simcity 4: Rush hour is almost permamently in my CD drive. It's the only CD dependant game I have left, and I don't really trust cracks...

Yes there are serial to USB ports. Probably your best bet, they're fairly cheap and should be flexible (and they're potentionally useful for hobby projects with older hardware!).

Well, modern Macs are basically a IBM PC clone minus the BIOS.

There is some oddball hardware who have vista support but not Windows 7 support which can be a problem for some people, just had to help a friend with such hardware. I managed to install the vista sound drivers fine despite being unsupported, and the only odd quirk was that I had to increase the sound quality within sound settings to get rid of scratching noises.

You can still use PROGMAN.EXE in modern windows. You can change the Windows shell in regedit (in older Windows you change the shell in win.ini). I remember that on a old computer we used, it would change to the progman.exe shell... in Windows 95 due to us uninstalling a old alternate Win 3.1 shell called Tabworks.

Microsoft disallowed alternate shells to be distribute with their OEM installs which was one factor of them being much less common with Windows 95 and forward. I still yet have to find a good Win 3.1 copy of Tabworks for nostlagia.

Oh keep in mind that progman.exe in Win XP SP3 and forwards is a dummy exe for legacy (it does not launch). You need to grab the one from unpatched Win XP or from Win 2000. You could roll your own shell if you're crazy enough too. And for the extra step of crazy optimization, you can always just make your own whole desktop enviroment for Linux.

Team Fortress 2! Like constantly. At most I take a break for a month then I return and play the game obsessively. I'm still hooked. I like to play Simcity 4 now and then too.

Greasemonkey is one of those extensions I have installed but barely use. It's neat though I think animated backgrounds are bit annoying after awhile.

Sounds like Team Fortress 2.

I think violent games can work out with younger kids, if a parent is supervising. I'm surprised though, I do recall that war re-enactments have always been common in playgrounds so it's possible that the increase in "violence" is slightly exegerrated.
