It's a medical touchscreen monitor. I have it mounted to the bottom of my loft bed. Opens some desk space which I now have to clean.

The touch screen interfaces with a serial connection. I've no clue how to connect it to my computer since I don't have a serial port. I do have a parallel port, and I heard there are serial-to-USB cables as well. Suggestions?

I also don't know what to do with a touch screen monitor. What can be done with it? I just don't have any specialized applications or games that take advantage of it. Looking for some cool ideas here as well.

from what I've heard serial-to-USB things generally work pretty well; they can create a virtual serial port and such (but presumably you'd also need some sort of driver to interface with the monitor, and I dunno where you'd find that)

The driver will be the largest issue. Windows XP won't have any driver support as-is - my own touchscreen came up as an "Unknown Device" when I run XP.

Also, the best "general" application I've found is drawing.. Sort of finger-painting style. :)

You can probably find drivers on the screen manufacturer's site.

Otherwise, if you have coding/hacking knowledge, you can make a driver or pseudodriver yourself. Messing with serial ports under Windows doesn't seem that hard. I never actually tried, but I did see some code... as for the protocol, perhaps there's some chip inside the monitor for which you can find a datasheet...

Well, Windows 8 seems to think we all want touch screens....
But... a serial port? Is that were the touchscreen readings are sent through?
You can use a standard FTDI USB serial adapter, but you will probably have to find out how the device communicates. COM port protocols are relatively easy though.

What to do with a TouchScreen? Angry Birds and Cut the Rope? :P

Yes there are serial to USB ports. Probably your best bet, they're fairly cheap and should be flexible (and they're potentionally useful for hobby projects with older hardware!).
