With Windows, there's always been setting to turn on and off hidden in the registry. I'm going to share a list of things I've found here. Most of this is specific to Windows 10, but some may work on older versions.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization]
"NoLockScreen"=dword:00000001
This disables that lock screen you have to click away before you can type a password in. Great for having a more Windows 7-styled login where you can just type your password in.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search]
"AllowCortana"=dword:00000000
Disables Cortana. This causes the Cortana search process to become suspended, thus not using cpu cycles. However, it cannot be killed to free ram as Cortana is a coded in as a core component.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore]
"RemoveWindowsStore"=dword:00000001
Disables Microsoft/Windows Store. Can also be achieved via Powershell for full stripping of the feature.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM]
"AccentColorInactive"=dword:00888888
This allows inactive windows to be coloured in a specified colour. In this case, inactive windows will turn grey. Make sure to use coloured title bars to maximise this effect.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet]
"EnableActiveProbing"=dword:00000000
Stops Windows querying stuff with Bing in the background.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\OperationStatusManager]
"ConfirmationCheckBoxDoForAll"=dword:00000001
Auto-tick that "Do this for all remaining items" box in Explorer.

[HKEY_Current_User\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Serialize]
"StartupDelayInMSec"=dword:000003e8
Windows 10 is actually coded with a delay before loading programs as to ensure all components are loaded up. This reduces the time to 1 second (1000ms). The default, as I hear, is 5 seconds. If you have a hyper-speed ssd, you could lower this even further - but this is a safe option.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"JPEGImportQuality"=dword:00000100
Increases the quality of desktop backgrounds when Windows converts that nice .png into a .jpg.

If anyone has anything I've not stumbled upon yet, feel free to share it here.

nice! some of these were missing for me, I reckon it's because I stopped updating windows 10 early on.

I doubt the features for those are even in.

Some of these don't show up in the registry unless you create the keys. Startup delay is one example, as I had to create it. Makes a considerable difference too.

Winaero Tweaker is a good interface for a ton of registry mods, but it's easy to destroy your system in the process. It's closed source, though.

Mind sharing what you'd typically disable for a Windows 10 Pro 1903 installation?

Also, Epele, by any chance have you found if there's a registry key to disable the Edge popups/etc. that sometimes appear, for instance?

On a related note, it's possible to make Windows 10's taskbar a lot more reminiscent of Vista/XP - I wrote a blog entry describing how to do this a few days ago. Won't link it here though :P

I just make the taskbar smaller and don't hide labels, but I wish there was a way to always combine and I do kinda miss the taskbar.

Has anyone used a find and replace tool? I did when I changed my username (and even then some applications have to be manually edited) but I can't remember the exact one I used, I think it was Advanced Regedit.

I spent a long time looking for a way to make Windows 10 look exactly like the Windows classic theme (pre-XP, anyway) and I guess it exists. It looks clunky but there's the link if you're interested in making everything grey and pixelated as god intended.

EDIT: After testing this on 1809 I can confirm this will destroy everything.
EDIT2: Don't use this. It's not malicious, it just breaks file explorer and metro settings. It's really interesting though, and worth testing in a VM if you want to see how Microsoft hides things but doesn't remove them.

In that case there's this, though I've never tried it myself.

While we're on the subject of ricing/customization:

MacType - Font smoothing a la Mac OS / Linux / literally anything other than Windows
OldNewExplorer - Removes the ribbon from file Explorer and has the simple bar from Windows 7 instead.
7+ Taskbar Tweaks - Some cool taskbar mods.

A hard to find registry tuning.

Disable Gamebar Presence Writer
Important: For this to work, you will need to change the permissions of the key to allow administrators to edit it. By default, this key is blocked from being changed.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsRuntime\ActivatableClassId\Windows.Gaming.GameBar.PresenceServer.Internal.PresenceWriter]
"ActivationType"=dword:00000000

This is not an easy tweak to apply, and certainly for advanced power-users who do not want the GameDVR to even persist in any form while gaming.
