Ten years ago? Geeze. We're well in to my "lost weekend" period.

I would be taking part time classes at my University by than. I also would be well into EmuNET, and just starting to open up tRO for real players. I became a ghost on the forums by this point. Other than that.. I don't really have any specifics. It's amazing how much time has passed. (Well time does that. heh)

@Colin ended up doing it all by hand, so that gave him a bit of an edge to make the plain text prettier. Here is the first example I could find back on the wayback machine. Too bad his layout is broken due to the archive..

It would be tied with the layout. Layouts on AB1 are snapshots of the person's layout and stored in the post. That means all the &tags& get rendered and put in the layout.

AB2 just uses what is in the user's profile. That means the &tags& will always show the current values.

Yeah, AB2 is the only one (as far as I remember) who has any kind of revision storage.

Back in 1995~1996 the big thing was names that ended in 'Z' Being 15 at the time it was all about the usual fitting in stuff. Talking with someone in Study Hall we came up with the name while bored. I unoriginality took Emu +z and surprisingly no one else had used it at that point. That's basically it.

I have a few variants: "Amuji" Basically to be my female alternate during one of the first gender switch events. It's based on a poor katakanfication of 'Emuz'.

The other one I use is 'possiblyemuz'. This one originated when I started to come back after my 'lost weekend' in 2010. Since there is almost no way 'Emuz' isn't already taken I had to come up with something. I use 'possiblyemuz' as a play on the fact I wasn't around for a long time. so "This that possibly emuz?" (Maybe?)

That's about it. We are lacking the avatar thread on the nostalgia train. I know we have a thread to show off current avatars, but not classic ones..

I thought AB1 eventually had layouts stored separately from the post? Or was that just a matter of making them not show up in quote boxes?

It basically was split out of the actual post text into it's own fields to allow for 'compact' post styles. I think maybe later on it was set to only show the new layout, but that was after my tenure.

The one layout I was unable to resurrect was quite busy and horrible. I had fire bros and a king yoshi.(on top of the one in the ranks.. The Fire Bros. was a large scan of the one in the SMB3 manual.)

Another issue with the AB1 style layout storage is that old layouts aren't always eternal. Files being reused for newer layouts, or just completely disappearing... try looking at the AB archives or even old threads at Jul, for example.

And there's stuff like customizable post sidebars, where that would just not work.

I've been using Mesia since 1998-1999 or so. I took it from my favorite old school action RPG on the NES: Crystalis. She's the heroine of the game, if you can call her that... (she shows up maybe 5 times across the entire game with minimal dialogue).

It was my Ragnarok Online server I ran for a few years. It was based around a custom soundtrack, .hack elements (not that many) and some other things I forget. (and it all ran on a 300mhz PIII in my house over cable lol)

Indeed. She's from I1 era. She was one of my closest friends from the board during that period of time. Somewhere along the line she became my unofficial 'sister'. (I forget how that came to be actually now that think about it.)

I don't say it often, but what I do I use "Ach-lem-em" style of pronunciation. I can't remember who, but someone I knew ended up just saying "Ace" every time.

Here's pretty much the oldest layout/sig I could find. The file I have it in is dated at being last modified on 01/27/2004. As you can see from my header, JavaScript used to be allowed, so I had me some of that in it. Need to see if I can find the broken header images, so they work again...

Heh. Yeah. I know some layouts would have looked odd with lower post counts. Since the post counts were 4~5 digits after a while.

We still have the RPG system that @Acmlm was working on, as well as one someone else put together (but it's more or less not a right fit.) Acmlm's actually was a client/server based implementation and would have been interesting.

At this point there are so many other things in the board that need work it's pretty much on permanent idle.

No idea. My guess is she moved on. I think someone said she had a live/deadjournal for a while and than vanished. The internet is like that, some people are around always and others disappear.
