I'd do it similar to HTML/JavaScript - a resource script would set the layout of the user interface like in HTML, and the buttons and fields would be interacted with by specifying onhover/onclick/onkeypress statements similar to how JavaScript does it, which would then call functions in the code.

Windows 3.1 has some disabled code that did some checks to prevent it from running on alternate DOS systems like DR-DOS, to force customers to buy MS-DOS. Microsoft got in a lot of trouble when that was discovered.

Can't believe nobody mentioned the Office Assistant.

It was introduced in '97, and later found its way into Windows XP as the Search Assistant and during the post-install/Windows Activation steps.

...okay, actually the concept originated in Microsoft Bob, but nobody cares about that. :P
