I only carry umbrellas for heavy rain, or when I have to walk a long way in it. Rain won't hurt you, it's just water.

I only use them in heavy rain as well. In fact if I didn't have a smart phone I would use it even less as I don't want my pockets to get soaked to the point where it could get wet. (Before I never carried one. I just got wet lol).

Umbrella of sugar would also make you stick to everything.. sounds less pleasant.
