What do you think is the most nostalgic way to listen to one's NSF collection? Mono or with some degree of stereo separation?

I prefer stereo since I always wear headphones, and it's nice to be able to block both ears from hearing the bullshit around me.

It depends on the sound of the game, really. In some cases, stereo sound makes the music sound worse.

I am typically used to Stereo although as mentioned, there's a few times I am bothered by it and stick to Mono.

I use headphones, I'm fine with the single channel being duplicated to both headphone channels for music that was originally one channel. What I really don't like is when music is piped to just one, so I hear it with only one ear.

Stereo for the most part.
Even thought, im not bothered using mono, but I find it better to listen the music in stereo. Especially when wearing headphones.

I especially hate this when it happens. It forces me to take off my headset and use my speakers because it bothers me way too much.

Mono cause that is how the music is on the orginal NES.

You can separate the audio signals to stereo on a real NES but it requires bit of a hardware hacking. It's funny when emulators have a stereo option though, with no way of setting stereo separation (it's pointless).

I mostly listen to 16 bit era stuff, so if I mixed in NES I usually mix it for stereo. However if it's stand alone I would go mono.

I usually just listen to everything through my laptop's speakers, so mono is fine by me... (and what the console used, anyway)

You can separate the audio signals to stereo on a real NES but it requires bit of a hardware hacking. It's funny when emulators have a stereo option though, with no way of setting stereo separation (it's pointless).
The 2A03 chip mixes all the channels to two outputs before output. The two pins on the chip are bridged before it connects to the single mono RCA jack. Like Ailure said, it's possible to make it stereo by adding a second RCA jack and un-bridging the pins, but the problem is how the chip mixes the audio. The square channels output on one pin and the triangle, noise, and sample channels output on the other. I may have gotten that kinda wrong, don't remember off hand. Either way, you end up with sound that doesn't sound the best when split up. One way around it is to use a potentiometer to adjust the mixture of those two channels so it doesn't sound so obviously bad. The only other way to get the NES's 5 sound channels to be seperated correctly is to remove the 2A03 chip and implement your own custom one.

Actually now that I think of it, Mono all the way. I don't know why I thought otherwise. :o

Maybe it was the speakers or something. *shrugs*

Here's an example of a game whose music sounds good in stereo. The upload is an uncompressed wav file that was created using stereo output. How do I know? Because it's my upload.
