When using emulators, which keys do you typically use for the key bindings? Although nowadays, I prefer to use an Xbox 360 pad for emulators (I'm a recent convert to 360 pads, after using Logitech Dual Actions for years, which look like a PS2 controller), but I still sometimes fall back on the keyboard...

The D-pad is always assigned to the arrow keys (with a second player on Home/Delete/End/PgDn as needed), analog stick (N64/Dreamcast) or Atari/Coleco keypad on the numpad, Start on Enter, and any controller buttons on the left (for example, on Genesis, ASDQWE for ABCXYZ, and R for MODE; for SNES, I use XZSAQW for ABXYLR), and for Atari 2600, simply spacebar for the fire button and the arrows (for joystick) or mouse (for paddle) :)

None, because I don't use keyboards for emulated games.

I map gamepad buttons usually based on position, although I have to improvise for stuff like N64.

Yeah, the N64 controller was quite ridiculous if you ask me... recently bought this Xbox 360 controller for stuff like the Saturn and N64 (still, I'll have to put the Z on the "Back" button which isn't the best spot but would still do the trick... I still have an old Logitech Wingman with 6 face buttons for Genesis and Saturn, because I hate having to map Y and Z to the shoulder buttons :P)

I don't have any good controllers. The one I DO have is pretty damn crappy (the joystick is slippery and doesn't react well, it's hard to explain), and that can only be used on consoles like the SNES and down. Which is fine, most of my emulation is that, but when I wanna do PS1 games...... Aaaaaaaaaaagh.

I usually have wasd as the left joystick/main movement controls (sometimes I change em for different games), the arrow keys for the right joystick/camera controls, and z, x, c, v for the a/b/x/y buttons. q and e are L and R. R is Z.

It's.... it's shit. BUT I PLAY EM ANYWAY.

I hate using my keyboard to play any game... It just doesn't feel right.

Speaking of the Logitech Dual Action, you can use it on a PS3 just fine. The only issue is the lack of a Home button.

Z/X and arrow keys, Enter/Spacebar or [] for Start/Select, A/S when I need more face buttons, Q/W for L/R usually.

When I need an analog stick I use an Xbox 360 controller (though it occurs to me I forgot to pack mine when I moved here, which is probably evidence of how little I use it :P)

Arrow keys -> D-Pad (or analog in the case of the N64)
X -> A
C -> B
Y -> Z
A -> L
S -> R
RDFG -> C buttons
IJKL -> D-Pad for the N64
Enter -> Start
Space -> Select

The second controller is mapped to the number pad in an awful way. I don't use it very often.

I would love to use a controller for emulated games or games on the computer that make use of it but alas I don't have any good ones I own. Most of my keyboard layouts have my hands cross each other. :O

Like my left hand on the arrow keys to move and some keys near it like shift for jumping and my right hand pressing zxcvas for most other keys depending on the game.

Maple Post-o-Matic 9.2
NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA/DS:

D-pad — Arrow keys
A/B — A/S
L/R — Q/W
X/Y — Z/X
Start — Enter
Select — Backspace

N64:

Z — LB/L1
C-stick — Right stick

Everything else is mapped to the pad in an obvious manner.

SNES:
D-pad - Arrow keys
Y -> Z
B -> X
A -> C
X -> V
L -> A
R -> S
Select -> Shift?
Start -> Enter
NES:
About the same, but B is on A, and A is on S.

Although I use a x-box 360 gamepad now. But I still use keybindings when I'm just testing something quick and switching between keyboard and gamepad is too much of a hassle (my desk isn't that big so I can't just put it down).

For the gamepad I just bind everything about the same as on the real console. Most notable is that I use the big left shoulderpad for Z on N64 (and the smaller ones for L and R) as that's the closest to N64 in feel (I wind up squeezing the binded Z button with the same finger as on the real N64, just in a different orientation). I used to have a keybinding for N64, but I forgot it... and as well I did, as N64 gameplay on keyboard is a pain.

I have now set some key bindings for Snes9x for saving purposes only.

0-9 selects savestates, F5 saves on the state I have selected and F8 loads them. Oh, and F12 takes screenshots. P pauses the game but I've noticed on the config page that it conflicts with a game button. I can't for the life of me find which one it is.

My preferred setup for the SNES is something like this:

F1 -> decrement savestate slot
F2 -> save state
F3 -> increment savestate slot
F4 -> load state
Tab -> fast-forward

E -> Up
S -> Left
D -> Down
F -> Right
G -> Select
H -> Start
I -> X
J -> Y
K -> B
L -> A
R or W -> L
U or R -> R

Actually, I haven't decided on L and R...I used to use W for L and R for R, but I decided that using R and U was closer to a SNES controller layout (even if it might not actually be easier to use), so...I don't know. For consoles with fewer buttons, obviously some of them won't be used (on NES emulators, for example, I'd have the four directions plus J for B and K for A). For consoles with more buttons, I'd add a few more, such as 2 and 4 for L2 and R2 (I haven't done any PlayStation emulation since switching L and R) or I, O, P, and L for the N64's C buttons. Occasionally, there will be others as well; I generally use F11 for screenshots and some of the unused number or Fn keys for things like disabling SPC channels and hardware layers on emulators that support such things. But that's the basic layout.
