Some of you may have heard this idea in IRC, but decided to go make a thread for it. And with it, a logo! What is Galoob Roulette? Well, Galoob was the maker of the Game Genie way back in the day, and allowed you to enter codes that modified memory of the game that was connected to them. (Duh.) And let's be honest, we've all seen "Let's Play's" before, and I've been itching to give it a try. But what was I going to do to keep it from being just another LP? After some thought, I came up with the idea after watching some people play Super Metroid Bingo (where you fulfil requirements during your run-through to make a row on the card) and BAM, idea was born. The idea is to take a random Game Genie code, not knowing what it does, and play through the game with it. The method of choosing one hasn't really been decided; I suppose I could just put them all in a hat and choose one. Those of you who submit codes should not say what they do unless you want to use the comment HTML tag:
Format does not matter. If you think two codes go well together, you can submit them as a single code with a + in the middle, like so: XXXXXX+XXXXXX The type of code does matter, though. I don't want anything that can easily break the game. If I have to, I will use save states if the code is known to be unstable at times. I want codes that take me out of my comfort zone. Physics, level alteration, game behavior, sprite alteration, control alteration are all great code types to submit. I want codes that would make a normal LP of a well-known game interesting to watch. So, what do you think? Good idea? Let's see your codes! I think I'm going to start with SMB3, unless any of you have any requests for me! |

Yeah, I was going to use SMB3 as a starter, to test the waters. I'd like to have someone to talk to alongside me, because I'm honestly not that interesting by myself. When I get this thang started, I'll give you a ring.
So what is your LP setup? I've got basically no problems with resources now that I've got this new machine. Do you record a certain screen area while recording a skype convo as the narration? Naturally, to make this work, I'd have to stream it as I record... yeah? |

Posted by KPAll you need is a screen capture program, like Debut or CamStudio, a sound driver that can be used for Stereo Mix (allows you to use your sound card as its own mic, use it as your screen capture's mic), and Audacity for commentary. For splicing them together, if video quality isn't much of a concern, Windows Movie Maker will suffice. I honestly suggest using Camtasia since it has a screen recorder buillt in that can capture a mic and the system audio (without Stereo Mix, and doesn't require using your onboard sound) at the same time, not to mention editing is relatively easy and it renders in good quality. The only problem is that it isn't free... Under normal circumstances. |

I already have Fraps but I will check out Camtasia. Seems like the most logical place to go, Fraps just doesn't have the bells and whistles that I want but it will do in absence of something better.
So Marzen, when should we do this thing? Today might be cool once I can get it all set up and skype downloaded. Also, anyone else have any interesting GG codes they would like to see used? |

Very interesting idea. While I don't have codes, perhaps I too could participate in some fashion. I have Camtasia and will recommend it as well. It is fairly easy to use and you don't have to mess with too many other programs. |

Well, I got my stream running on Twitch. http://www.twitch.tv/kp9001/b/334115785
Probably going to just use this and xsplit. Works fine. (Excuse the loud humming, there was a feedback loop and I eliminated it.) I think I'm actually ready to start this series. |

I liked that one that made you always run/go through certain blocks. But my favorite was the sprite placement screw up one, hehe. That I say would be a good challenge since you play through SMB3 expecting things to be in a certain place and then suddenly you play a game that looks like a badly edited version. XD
Edit: I take that last one back, the wand in replacement of side blocks or whatever is pretty epic too. You can skip whole worlds. |
