I like to write it out as much as possible and even writing down short cuts for notes bothers me. Abbreviations of certain words can be quite confused at times.

What is your stance and use of them like? Do you even say them aloud or do you say them as they would be?

Being active duty, we're exposed to what seems like an unlimited amount of acronyms. So while we use them quite often at work, I tend not to use them as much outside of work. I do use them, just not nearly as much.

Depends on the # & types of abbrevs. & the context.

If I'm desperately trying to write down notes in class from a fast lecturer, I'll abbreviate a lot.

If I'm trying to be concise because of space restrictions, like in a table, I'll abbreviate.

If it's something that's almost always abbreviated, like "etc." or "St.", I'll abbreviate.

I tend to abbreviate names a lot.

Otherwise I typically spell things out.

One type of abbreviation I literally never use is the txt msg spk stuff. You know, like "u" for "you", "4" for "for", etc. That always looked cheesy and dumb to me.

I very rarely use abbreviations, because in most cases I have time to write out my thoughts. I don't even abbreviate when I have space constraints, like on Twitter, I would sooner make multiple posts to get a point across than look like an idiot. Though, I will admit that if I'm only over by a few characters, I'll omit spaces after punctuation. >_>

I share Taryn's opinion that if someone can't spell a word out, they look retarded.

Yeah. I mean, "for" isn't EVEN that long so whoever uses "4" annoys the living nerve out of me. There's other such examples but overall, I dislike most of them as I said. This is one of the reasons why I hate texting over emailing. Most emails I get sound more intelligent over any if not all texts I get from some friends and family.

Depends if I've run out of characters on Twitter or if I don't have a lot of time to type up a text message.

I don't use Twitter, but if I did and I ever hit the limit, I'd probably find a nice cut-off point, drop in some ellipsises...

...and start a second tweet with another pair and the rest of the story. #selfdemonstrating

I rarely use abbreviations in normal speak. When I'm playing games I do, like "cap" or "MIA" or stuff, depending on the game I'm playing. But I never abbreviate things in text, or writing, or anything like that. Usually it's less of a "abbreviate in games so you can type it quicker" and more of a "That's just what the term is called". Like "GG" for Good Game. Although I never do the "glhf" stuff, I always enter a LoL game saying "Howdy all, g'luck and have fun!"

I use abbreviations little to never as I am a major grammar Nazi especially on the internet. Even on twitter or in a text message I always take the time to write it out properly and it annoys me when people abbreviate for no reason "just because it's cool" even though they have a ton of characters left. My mum is a capital offender when it comes to this. Anyway that's my rant over (Hopefully) before anyone dies of boredom.

While I am not a grammar Nazi (at least towards others), I am pretty much like this. In addition, my step mom always seems to send messages like you mentioned.
If you didn't know who sent it, you'd think a kid wrote it. At least that's the feeling I get. :o

I really do randomly use abbreviations. I almost always use char for Character. That's a constant one I use.

Some of the others I can think of are temp, diff, var, and basically anything that's an english word that is also a unix command. ;)
