A few weeks ago, Firefox (v16) got infected with some adware that puts annoying rollover ads on literally every page I view. Occasionally I'll spy the message "Ads by CouponDropDown", or their logo will appear in the upper-right corner. I've looked up CouponDropDown and apparently it normally shows up as an add-on, but I'm not seeing it, or anything with an even remotely similar name, in either Plugins or Extensions. MalwareBytes isn't finding anything either.

Help! How can I get rid of this? ;_;

Last view: 1445 days 		I'd try to remove FF completely and reinstall. Delete any and all plugins and extensions. While that might not do anything, it is worth a try.

Not really sure otherwise. MalwareBytes is pretty good but it can miss some things as all such programs can. Try running with another scanner as well.

I'd say we can't figure it out outright without taking a look for ourselves.

Also, I don't think uninstalling Firefox will do it; it has this habit of not uninstalling plugins when you do that.

Last view: 1445 days 		Well, first uninstall all the plugins then the browser itself if that fails. Delete the folder manually if you must after the uninstall.
If anything else, it is one less place for it to hide, and it will make narrowing it down a bit easier.

OK, I tried Spybot, which found a bunch of stuff but not the adware in question. Then I started removing extensions and...the ads are gone! ^_^ Apparently the ads sneaked in through a benign-looking extension that I had added recently. Fucking devs, selling their soul to adware companies in order to get a few cents.

Which is a shame, since Firefox otherwise defaults to .txt files scrolling both horizontally and vertically for some stupid reason. Sorry, I don't want to scroll across and back to read every damn paragraph.

One solution to that would be viewing the source of the txt file. The visual result is the same and the source viewer has wordwrap support.

I'm glad you managed to get rid of it. At some point I had something similar, adware that would periodically open a Firefox tab with some ad. The thing was well-hidden in my AppData folder. It's like they're hiring virus programmers to make their shitware.

It is a shame some people have the nerve to throw adware into their extension. I mean, phone apps are one thing (although give me a blocker and I will gladly use it) but any such for FF or other browsers is quite another.
