Heya, folks. I figured I'd share a hack idea with you guys. It's still a WIP, so it's all just bare bones. Besides, I need to practice making game concepts. Mind you, this is from the perspective of the Mario series, so it's not meant to be deep or epic, let alone be taken seriously.

The idea is that Bowser and the Koopa Clan have found a way to enter the TV world and take control over viewers so that Bowser can rule the Mushroom Kingdom. While there, they change all the shows into the Koopa King's own desire. While taking over the cartoon section, a cartoon character named Scotty Dog somehow gets kicked out of the TV world and ends up into the Mushroom Kingdom, specifically, Mario's house. Now, it's up to Mario and Scotty to save both the Mushroom Kingdom and the TV world.

Again, this is a WIP idea. I know WHAT happens. I'm still working on HOW it happens.

You play as either Mario or Scotty Dog as you travel between the TV World and the Mushroom Kingdom via special televisions that are scattered throughout both worlds. The TV world consists of sections that have different themes such as a cartoon theme, a wildlife theme (like a nature show), a sci-fi theme, etc.

Mario and Scotty have special abilities unique to them that allow one to get to certain areas that the other can't.

What do you think? For an idea in progress anyway. I'm not asking for help or looking for a team BTW. Trust me, I have practically nothing noteworthy to contribute as of yet.

Seems like a pretty awesome idea, actually. That is, if it can be pulled off. Fortunately, SMW is so wide open now, and you can do pretty much anything without too much technical knowledge. The TV/movie universe is so large that the possibilities are endless.

How are you with level design, ExGFX implementation, etc.? I'd be interested in seeing some work from you. :D

Thanks. I'll admit I was nervous about how people would react if I talked about it.

The only thing I can do is sprite editing, and even then, I'm still a rookie. I don't know if I can design a level or not. I've never done it before, but that's only because I'm afraid I might goof up in some way, like adding too much stuff or not enough stuff, make a level look weak, etc. I know I shouldn't be asking this here, but is there anyone who can teach me how to do a level design? (passable design at the very least)

I just realized something, I forgot to show some examples of my sprite editing skills.

(the SNES edits are a mixture of Mario from Super Mario Land 2 and Luigi from Super Mario Advance 2, 8-bit is easy, but 16-bit is another story.)


I only know of ExGFX. It's the only way to add sprites in SMW, right? I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

The best way to learn level design is to play hacks and take note of the different techniques that are used. Then, open up a level and practice at it. You're not going to be the best right off the bat, but keep plugging away at it and you'll get the hang of it.

ExGFX is a way to insert an extended graphics sheet into SMW. Has nothing to do with sprites, unless you want to dress them up in your own graphics set... Say, you want Mario to have a scarf in a certain snow-themed level. You need ExGFX for that.

The sprites look pretty cool, although I haven't seen them implemented in anything. If you ever get it in SMW and can make a video of it and link it here, that'd be cool!

I think I will. I downloaded a good some of hacks prior to becoming a member here. Maybe I'll take a look at those.

Thanks. Coming from an admin, that's saying a lot. =)

Unfortunately, I don't have a good video tool for something like that. If I do go through with it, I might stick to screenshots.

Well, get it in SMW and I might be able to help you out with it. You might also give Fraps a try, it's a screen recording program. Good luck with the learning process. I feel it may come around easier for you than some others. Users sometimes come around that barely know how to put together a sentence (due to idiocy, or just plain speak another language) so it's good that you don't have to juggle that along with the learning process. :P

I like this idea, it's pretty cool. You have my permission to use levels from my past SMB1 & SMB3 hacks into your hack if you'd like for motivation, snag 'em here so you can get an idea about level design. I really hope this help out, good luck with your hack. :)
