So Microsoft skipped Windows 9 and went on to Windows 10. It looks like it'll be better than Windows 8. The Metro apps screen was strange to me as it is better suited for touchscreens. I prefer the regular desktop screen. But it seems like Windows 10 will be a big improvement from Windows 8, so hopefully it will turn out that way. :)

I believe Windows 10 is set to be released in 2015.

If they make it more like Win7, maybe they'll win me back as a customer. Fuck Win8, that is all.

I can only imagine this numbering is Microsoft giving the middle finger to the "every other Windows is good" idea :P

I'm curious to see how it'll be in actual use; I've actually gotten used to the Windows 8 Metro and so having the apps be windowed and the new start menu will be a big change.

Just maximize 'em. You might be surprised -- they might go full-fullscreen then.

Kiyoshi told me you can finally Ctrl+V into the command prompt.

It took them what, 21 years to fix this bug? Microsoft sure is fast.

As long as it's better than Win8. I share Trel's feelings towards it.

Nice, might be finally worth the upgrade :D (I've heard one reason they skipped "9" was because of "Windows 9x" too :P)

My hopes aren't that high. But hey, they could surprise me yet.

(I'm pretty likely to keep using Windows 7 until that becomes a hindrance to my computer being usable.)

Apparently Java does in fact return a string, and checking if it starts with "Windows 9" was a common way to detect 9x back in the day when it mattered- and thanks to corporations, old Java code is still in use all over >_>

Wouldn't it make more sense to test the version number anyway (like 4.0.950, 4.1.1998, 5.0.2195, etc.)? BTW, I wonder what the final build number will be for Windows 10 :P (don't think they'll make it in time for 10000)

You'd think checking the version number would make sense, but a lot of programmers stupidly try to reinvent the wheel and do their own checking. You're supposed to call GetVersionEx, but who knows what other ways one could find. MSDN's page on the OSVERSIONEX structure even has a table of what version numbers map to what Windows. For example, 7 is 6.1, so dwMajorVersion is 6 and dwMinorVersion is 1, while Server 2008 R2 is the same but with wProductType != VER_NT_WORKSTATION.

Makes me wonder what the OSVERSIONEX for 10 is...

Programmers often do things that work now, but won't work later. This isn't caught when they do testing, of course, because they don't have a time machine.

I remember a DOS-era installation program that tried to check the remaining hard drive space before installing, and would quit if there wasn't enough. Problem was, when I tried to install the program many years later on a newer computer, the hard drive was so big that the size overflowed and the installer thought I had negative space, stubbornly refusing to install the program. Argh, these things really should come with a manual override.

Another common problem was checking the DOS version using an == operator rather than >=, so it would work only with exactly version 5 (say) rather than versions 5 and later. Later DOS versions actually came with a program that let you fake the version number because that was such a widespread practice.

They really didn't skip it at all as there are 2 "9" if you will
Windows 8.1 and Windows 9x which if i remember right was the basis before NT which started with XP

And 8.1 = "9"

I heard that 2 not to mention i know people with older hardware that use Damn Small Linux because there hardware is so old it can barely if ever handle even XP anymore or even at all

I don't find Windows 10 to be too bad, based on screenshots and videos, but it seems to be better than Windows 8.

My thoughts exactly. Still though, when 8 initially popped up I was thinking based one a few looks it'd be worse than Vista...and that's saying something. *shrug*

Honestly they should call it something other than 10. Not sure what but 10 seems silly to me, especially skipping 9. Anyone else think so?
