2TB would probably be ideal for my situation

i used to brag about how i couldn't fill my 1TB drive but i've been pretty packratty about anime and movies lately, plus i've also gotten into preservation (building archives of entire websites), so my 1TB is starting to feel a little cramped...

that said i could be a lot more efficient. there's a lot of stuff i could delete if i wasn't so weirdly emotionally attached to it, so i guess i don't strictly *need* the extra TB. but it'd be nice...

Mom bought me a new used computer out of nowhere sometime in the spring (I literally just randomly got a big box at my door one day with a computer in it), so now my specs are a little different. Not too much better, but better at all, at least -- I don't do a lot of PC gaming, so it'll suffice and won't be a decaying piece of shit ready to burst into flames at any time like my old computer was.

SHINONOME (hilariously refurbished HP Compaq 6200 Pro SFF from 2013):
Intel Q65 Express
Intel Core i5-2400 "Sandy Bridge" CPU @ ~3.10GHz (6MB cache, 4 cores)
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM
500GB Western Digital HDD ("NANO")
1TB Western Digital HDD ("HAKASE")
NVIDIA GeForce GT 710
some actually fairly decent PCIe wifi thing
two shitty dell things from 2007 for the monitor
WD Elements 1TB external HDD
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

I actually have the resources to buy a new computer at this point but I'd just... rather spend that money on other things. More interesting and weird retro computers, more music stuff to make music with since I like doing that, more fun stuff. This works fine for my purposes (90% web browsing and playing old games), so whatever.

- are you actually alive?
hardly, these days. i get by

Posted by Thieppy
- how large is your sphere of interest to include all the good stuff while keeping out the.. uh.
mm, usually if i have a friend who can make a genuinely good case for something being interesting i'll check it out. a lot of my "filter" for deciding what i should check out and not is just... whether it genuinely reaches me through word of mouth i guess. by "genuinely" i mean like, whether or not people tell me about it cuz they're genuinely excited about it as opposed to it being a big cultural event, or whatever.

the problem is i just don't get out a ton (all my close friends are pretty geeky types) and i don't have any sort of TV access (never have) so there's a ton of stuff that i've just never heard of or heard anything about. like i know game of thrones exists but i've never ever seen it or been compelled to watch it

Posted by Thieppy
- can I give you all the white chocolate I get? I'm not a big fan. I legitimately tried tho
happily, i'll never say no to free chocolate!

Posted by Thieppy
- wait, you make music? may I ask what software you use to achieve that, what your resources are (soundfonts and whatnot), and wether you compose your own tracks or base on others'?
ooh well, there's a looot of stuff i use... FL Studio 10 is probably the thing i've used most in my life. there's like a bunch of random VSTs i have including from this site called tweakbench and i have a bunch of dumb samples i'll just mess around with sometimes (including ripped n64 game samples, lol). there was a period a while back where i was sampling drum beats a lot and cutting them up like some 80s/90s/00s hiphop person -- i know that's not in vogue right now cuz it's all 808s and shit but i love the sound of more "natural" stuff being cut up and repurposed (shockingly i love nujabes). anyways, i don't have specifics for soundfonts and VSTs cuz i'm not very good at keeping track of this stuff...

sometimes i'll use old tracker stuff if i'm in the mood for that (sometimes this weird old tracker called sound club, which i'm pretty sure like 5 people have ever heard of -- i also like famitracker). in sound club, most recently, i wrote a lot of... moody, electric piano-y stuff. stuff that sounds like nighttime music i guess

and then i can play a couple instruments, although not very well. i bought a squier telecaster not too long ago and it sounds cool as shit, and i'm getting an epiphone SG soon too. i can semi play piano, but i'm terrible at it. i have a fast track and some USB stuff that i can use to record this stuff now, so that's fun.

as for music, i almost always write my own... i've thought about doing covers of stuff and thought maybe that might be fun -- sometimes i'll just play other peoples' songs if i'm just messing around or whatever but i've never actually sat down and worked on a cover like it's a project, but lately it's been kind of an urge i've had, watching stuff like what fluffymomo does has really ignited that urge in me

Posted by Thieppy
gotta say, if that was advertizement it worked very well. picked my interest
oh, no, it wasn't. i'm way too embarrassed to show most people anything i've written (only a handful of people have ever heard my music and i've never posted it publicly)

Wasn't Taryn just the cutest furball? :(
she was nice. i miss her

Posted by Thieppy
how desolate is it that despite Dani mentionning Taryn to everybody, none will get to meet her in person?

I'm thinking about ones that joined after the incident.. and onwards.
it's pretty desolate... i can't imagine what it's like for the people that just hadn't met her period. to know there was a person that had that level of influence, that so many people were friends with, that just... isn't here anymore

Posted by Darkhero
Have you played any homebrew games?
not a ton... i played the demo for super bat puncher which was fun (but i don't think it ever got finished...) and i played a little bit of streemerz. but most of my contact with indie games has been through PC stuff...

do you believe ryoshi22 may have kept the art he borrowed to put this together?
saw the link to "minitokyo" and conflated it with megatokyo and genuinely got scared that fred gallagher drew this art that i liked

Started playing Xenosaga. Can't say I really understand what's going on yet.
sounds about right for the Xeno games

i'm playing DARK SOULS right now because i'm an EPIC CHALLENGE GAMER

no but seriously it's great so far. impeccable design almost everywhere and just consistently fun and challenging. i think i like demon's souls a little bit more, but dark souls' world is just mmmm yum delicious me likey

it seems as if this "from software" company is one to watch, folks. hopefully i'll play bloodborne sometime before 2030

i am also playing Metroid Fusion

sometime when i wasn't active here, i beat Metroid Prime 1 again and came to the conclusion that it still holds up and is excellent

but Metroid Fusion isn't really doing it for me so far. i'll need more time with it for my feelings to actually crystallize properly, i'm sure, but so far it's just not all that compelling as a metroid game

also i've been playing a lot of city builder sims lately for whatever reason
mostly cities: skylines with the occasional sim city 3000

Kas... i never really got to know her that well (i don't think i've ever spoken to her one-on-one), but no doubt she's had at least *some* influence on my life, even if it's indirectly... she was one of the first acmlmers that actually transitioned and in a roundabout way i'm indebted to her for taking those brave steps forward at a time when being openly trans was basically social suicide. she influenced people i knew who came out, who in turn influenced me. my only hope is that i can pass being able to live as myself onto other people, you know? in a positive way.

regrettably i'm not sure who kitation is
