The hack is still going strong...

A few of the changes so far:

New enemy types:
-Beached Cheep Cheep
-Koopa Kids will attack with powers related to Mario's own power ups (see Ice fired by Larry)

I said fuck it and ramped up the difficulty. The game was getting boring to create for so I decided to hell with people who will whine, I want this game to be harder than typical Nintendo fare.

The game now revolves around open hubs: Worlds are completely open, play any level at any time. Howver, worlds are initially inaccessible. There is a "hub" stage that has 8 pipes, but in order to reach each pipe, you must use a power up that gives you the ability to reach it, such as flying, swimming for long periods or building ice bridges.

You must play levels in your initial World (World 0) and collect stars. World 0 lacks all power ups. Once you collect enough Stars you can access the boss hub. Defeat a boss here and you'll immediately unlock a new power up. Go to the world transition level and use the new power up to gain access to a new world. The new world will test your skill to use whatever power up you used to access it. Once you collect enough stars in that world and defeat its boss, you'll get to go back to the Boss hub and defeat another boss.

Once you gain all 8 power ups, you can use them in conjunction to fully get out of World 0 and go to the next part of the game...

Looks interesting. I just hope that the game isn't that hard in the beginning. Hoping for a nice difficult curve.

Also the monochromatic level looks nice.

The problem is that with the open world style, I can't predict how someone will play the game. Should World 2 be harder than 4? What if someone jumps straight to World 7? I plan to make each world have easy to moderately difficult levels with a few levels that are really hard. You can get on through the game by completing the easy to moderately difficult levels, but in order to collect all 100 stars, you'll have to play the really difficult levels. Obviously you get something for that... But each level will be more of a test of skill with each power up rather than being a hoard of enemies and impossible jumps ;)

Pirate Boo. A cousin of regular Boo, but he won't shy away when you face him. Also, he's not interested in your life, but instead, your coins! One touch from him and he'll steal your cash and FAST! Also welcome to deep sea/pirate theme ;)

EDIT: After re-reading my text, I do realize the message came off as overly harsh and that was not my attention. Let me redo this post and hopefully my message will come across better.

I pretty much need some help creating levels for Mario Adventure 3. I'm looking for good level designers to contribute levels and ideas to my hack. In order to be a part of the project, I am asking interested members to create their best levels using vanilla SMB3 and SMB3 Workshop and save the level externally and submit it to me dahrkdaiz[@]gmail.com This will basically be a test to see how well you design levels and how creative you can be.

If you become part of the project, you'll use Reuben and design levels for Mario Adventure 3. There are some slight restrictions from an over all game design stand point (either game induced or over all project vision induced) but I don't really see it being a problem. You'll receive full credit for the levels you design (may even have the credit display in the game before the level loads!) and are only obligated to submit at least one level.

Sounds cool.
Now I dont have clear one thing, can we use Reuben to make levels, or only SMB3 workshop?

If SMB3 workshop must be used obligatory, then can we add more objects.enemies than the already existing amount of them in the level?

You need to use SMB3 Workshop, but you can make the level as large as you want, any level type.

You're basically asking for, not only level designers, but skilled level designers to put down quite some effort and time to help you out on this project without letting them have any sort of creative input on the project what-so-ever.

This was definitely a miscommunication on my part. My intention is to be able to be creative using what I give you. I don't want a situation where someone designs a level and says that they need the Hammer Bros. throw their hammers higher in order to fit their level design. That won't happen. However, if someone comes up with the idea of a new Bros. type that fits the theme of a particular world, I'll be all over it and code it into the game. I want ideas and creativity, but they have to fit in the vision of the hack.

Posted by Lunaria

ROM hacking is not exactly a hobby with cash payback, due to the nature of it. A lot of the pay-off for me has always been to see the creativity I put out come to light and how players interact with it. And heck, hacks does not even have to be long either, I have played SMB3 hacks that are a few sweet levels and I enjoyed that.

And while I personally don't have the time and effort to dedicate to another project right this instance; I can't really see any advantage to joining this project vs setting out on my own that outweighs the disadvantages. Of course, I mean no offence by saying this DahrkDaiz. :p

Pretty much the only advantages are: getting to design levels using an expanded level design system and new enemies AND seeing your levels in a completed product. A lot of people are good level designers but lack the time to see a project to completion. By throwing in a few levels in MA3, they can work on levels as they want and see it in a final release. They'll get full credit for their designs, even have their name display before the level loads.

Alright. Maybe ill join. Also I have to ask a couple of more things.

-Can we submit levels that require 2 areas? (like a level that needs just another area for the exit, like in 1-4 of the original game)

-Can I send you the uploaded level file somewhere via PM here? (I just dont want to use the email...)

You can use as many areas as you want and yeah, PM is fine ^_^

Another thing I have to ask...how we will link the levels with multiple areas? Should we specify which pipe/door leads to which pipe/door?

Also, apparently, I think I will need the ability to be able to place and exit anywhere on the level. Since I guess mario adventure 3 supports that, am i allowed to do levels based with that in mind, or its only allowed SMB3WS exit positioning?

Reuben does support all this, but, I want levels designed in vanilla SMB3 using Workshop for the try outs. Nothing super fancy is needed, just a single level that's fun.

So how much of us have to submit levels before you are comfortable enough to start the level work?

It's more a matter of finishing up the new tile property engine in both MA3 and Reuben. Once that's complete then I can start passing out copies of the game and of the latest Reuben to people to use to make levels. My progress has been slow recently due to: vacation, work, and recently, 3 days of being sick. I may go ahead and at the very least play levels that people have submitted and let people know who's I like.

Rise from the dead thread! For seriously though, I was able to stamp out a good chunk of progress this weekend. I really hope by the end of the month I have the tile system 100% complete and that I can get editors out to people to help make some levels. I pretty much decided that if you took the time to submit a level, you can submit stuff for MA3.

From what I can tell, Reuben should be ready for a beta release to a select few. I will create a short manual and release it to said few for creating levels and having fun. Expect something by the end of this weekend!

Just an update for people who don't follow my progress on Facebook:

The project is still going strong, albeit, delayed. The initial January 2014 release won't happen due to the amount of time I actually get to work on the project. However, I'm still making progress:

Recent changes and features include -

-Fire Snakes leave a trail of fire on the ground as they hop around
-Ninja Bros. enemy coded in - throws stars in 8 directions and will attempt to dodge you
-Giant Chomps that eat through the ground
-Red and green springs
-Keys that can be carried and used to unlock doors
-Ice blocks now float in water and can be stood on top of
-Levels that dim to all black until you use a fireball to light a candle temporarily, making the room visible until the flame goes out
-Trip wires that, when touched, can activate Bullet Bill turrets, cannons, explosions
-Sparks from SMB2 coded in
-New type of Bullet Bill generator that fires at you from 8 directions
-SMW style spinner blocks
-New Mushroom Bank that allows you to deposit coins, these coins will earn interest as you play through. This is good to do since some enemies in the game can quickly steal your coins (Pirate Boos).
-Rotating Fire Bars from SMB1 and new Ice Bars that will freeze and toss Mario around
-New level theme "Sky Castle"
-Reverse water falls that move up
-Frog Mario is now "Poison Frog" Mario. This allows him to temporarily coat himself in a poisonous film that makes him invincible. However, this uses your air supply very quickly and takes time to regain.
-Probably a lot more changes that I've forgotten

And now, images!

It's finally ready! The second demo for Mario Adventure 3 is ready to play! This demo basically includes all of World 1 but lacks a lot of things that are yet to be shown off. I won't even begin to go into all the changes, just play it and hopefully you enjoy it!

Emotionally distant even from those closest to him.

"Current situation makes him feel unable to prove himself, but tries to make the best of things."

Current situations have left him feeling overwhelmed and tormented. Needs to avoid further activity or demands and concentrate on relaxing and becoming emotionally sound.

Current events have him feeling forced to make bargains and put aside his own desires for now. He is able to find satisfaction and happiness through sexual activity.

Your Desired Objective

"Wants interesting and exciting things to happen in his life. He is able to make others like him, because of his genuine concern for them. He is charming and open and makes friends easily. He can have an over-active imagination, which leads him to fantasize and daydream."

Your Actual Problem

Longs the freedom to make his own decisions and plans without the criticism and restrictions of others. Uses his charm to deal with others and get what he wants.

Your Actual Problem #2

"Impressed by unique and one of a kind things, and by people with exceptional personalities. Tries to takes the characteristics he likes in other people and apply it to himself as well as coming across as a unique individual."

Edit - Took the test incorrectly the first time. Retook it and got a much more accurate result.

Is a burp just a fart that comes out of your mouth? :O

I actually wonder sometimes that it is. I've had times where I felt cramping in the muscles that control farts only to burp several minutes later. That's a rather uneasy realization.

Are you going to ignore any SMB3 related questions?

What is the best gift you've ever received?

I will not ignore any questions, even SMB3 related.

The best gift I ever received - the NES Challenge Set. An NES with Super Mario Bros. 3 along with the strategy guide.
