I feel that a cutscene should be just that... A cinematic. None of that QTE shit like Shinmue or Resident Evil 4.

Another thing, if there's voice acting... The quality had better be there. None of that phoned in bullshit.

* Trelior deathglares Final Fantasy X.

Ultimately, they should be skippable... Especially if it's before an insanely tough boss fight.

* Trelior shifts his glare to Kingdom Hearts.

I think that cutscenes can add to the experience in a story-intensive game such as an RPG or adventure game. However, they really should be made skippable. I don't like when I die after a cutscene and then have to watch the whole thing again.

Yeah, I agree. I also would like some option to auto skip if you've seen the cut scene already because you died on a boss. I mean, if it is a game that places you right before the boss then you should be able to just leap back in.

I also like ones used in in-game mechanics.

An example is in a RPG that reveals to you a powerful boss that shows you the helplessness of the situation with you being unable to do anything as it wipes the floor with you. Then before it destroys you, a mysterious man joins in and takes the blow without flinching. No damage. He then does a few attacks which turns the table on this otherwise impossible battle. But the enemy disappears before it is defeated. The man then asks if you are okay and heals you and your party.

So yeah, there's lots of ways of doing so but I am in between on 3 and 4.

As long as they're used correctly, they're quite nice. Games which feel like you're viewing a movie however.. pretty much suck.

I know most pre-battle cutscenes in Tales of Vesperia can be skipped on a second playthrough though. That's quite nice, 'cause a few are fairly lengthy.

I don't have any real preference, because some games are MADE from their cutscenes that are long and unskippable/too important to skip (Metal Gear Solid comes to mind). While some are really annoying because of this (Kingdom Hearts aaaaaaa.)

I'mma go ahead and say when used sparingly/skippable though, because that's the general idea for MOST games. Cutscenes can be really sweet, but sometimes I just wanna play a fucking game. That's why I love Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Pioneered cutscenes, the cutscenes look amazing, but they're all skippable, and you don't even need to know what's going on to play the game. Just move right and kill things.

I think Kid Icarus: Uprising made me like cut-scenes. All the talking and stuff, it's pretty straight through. I like the games cut-scenes and over half the dialog is hilarious.

I totally dig game cut scenes since Ninja Gaiden on the NES back in the days. They really pull me in like I'm watching a movie at some point.

Cut scenes in games can be done well and quite a bit to the game.
For example, the cut scenes in megaman ZX Advent are used really well and add quite a bit of tension/epicness to the situations they are used.

Such as the rock-on/mega merge.

Skippable. I don't mind watching them the first time, but when I decide to replay a game after finishing it, unless it was a totally awesome cutscene. *right before Rubicante when Edge learns his parents fate in on of the FFIV remakes*

On the other hand, if its an extremely long one that you have to watch before any boss fight (like Trel & Marzen mentioned above about KH)...yeah, then they just make the game annoying.

Valve does it right.

Make me feel part of the world, do not make me feel that I'm watching a movie. In Valve games control is rarely stripped off the player, and when it does it's cause of your player character being helpless by one reason or another. Sure sometimes the freedom is a illusion, but it tend to work better than watching a movie.

Most of the time the ingame cutscenes aren't completly jarring, but I do admit there is plenty of scenes in games like Deus Ex Human revolution that could as well be done as ingame conversations.

From playing Assassin's Creed 3, most of the scenes are short if in the middle of a mission as to draw attention to something. Otherwise, the only other scenes are for mission starts typically, or when an Assassination target dies.

But they're used quite nicely. I also noted they can be all skipped with the press again to skip style.

I must say, playing a game with a "press anything to skip without a warning" skip scene style can be irritating when you do it by accident.
