11 years... strange how so much has happened between then and now, but being on here makes it feel like just yesterday.

mesia, when i was visiting my parents around christmas, i found a letter you wrote to me when we were youngins. there was a picture of you with a bunch of other people and a lot of funny margin notes. if i had known this board was going to be a thing and that i was going to post on it, i would have scanned it!

I just vaaaaaaguely remember this. I'm pretty sure I still have the letter/photograph you sent me, too. I think you were wearing a shirt with a cow on it and doing this face: :P

I got married in 2011, so I guess my goal is to keep my wife happy and stay married? :D 2011 wasn't a bad year. Got a wife and a cat!

In all seriousness, probably going to be a lot like 2011, except the date I write on the few checks I need to make out, like to my borough for the yearly trash collection, or my sewer bills (the rest I pay online).

Congratulations on both the wife and the cat!! :D

2011 was a pretty shit-tastic year for everyone in Japan, due to the massive earthquake/tsunami. It pretty much takes precedence over all my other memories of the year. 2012 will be a year of changes. I'm hoping to get into the PhD program at my university, travel more (domestically and internationally), and start some kind of creative project. Any ideas?!

!!!

I used to have a bunch of ridiculous screenshots from Graal on my computer, they've got to be on an external HDD somewhere around here...

So simple :P Just a 13" Macbook Pro and some good Bose speakers. Oh, and a printer lurking below.

At the moment, I have about 30 more books around my desk than are in the picture... yay thesis writing.

It's been a long time since I last posted mine, but here's one from yesterday ... (and for fun, here's one from almost exactly 10 years ago)

Or at least that's what I look like when I'm shaved and haven't gone for months without a haircut :P

good lord acmlm, you really shaped up!

Agreed! Emuz looks the same as I remember, but Acmlm's changed o_o For the better, of course :)

I might regret this, but here's me, taken a few minutes ago. I just woke up from a nap, hence the sweatshirt and messy hair. (read: how I look like 90% of the time)

Why would you regret it? If it's because of creepy internet stalkers like GM, I can see the reasoning.

If it's because you're unsure about how you look-- let me just say this: I'd hit it.

Naw, it's because the first picture of myself I posted on here at age 15 is still floating around the internet (or on some people's computers)!

and uh...thanks.

This isn't too different from what my desk area looks like in concept.

Masters or PhD?

Simple and clean is better, in my opinion. This is actually pretty messy for me. You should post yours!

Master's. My thesis is due next Tuesday, haha... ah.

That sofa, or whatever you're sitting on, looks awesome. Did you thrift it?

Sunny and beautiful. The high today is 8˚C (about 46˚F) which is cold for Tokyo. Wish we'd get a bit of snow, too!

I'm a Computer Science major at the Georgia College State University, planning to go into interactive media design, maybe a minor in Literature. I don't have a job job, but I'm gonna try to get one at the library. I've worked in Libraries before, so maybe the experience will help me get one :D

You live in Georgia?! I'm originally from Atlanta :o

I'm at one of those hippie liberal arts schools where there aren't any majors. We have divisions, though, and I'm in the Comparative Culture one for master's students. On my second year now, gonna turn in my thesis on Tuesday and graduate in March. Then it's (hopefully) onto PhD track at (hopefully) the same school!

Before that, I did 2 years of research in the Sociology department at another university in Japan (Waseda), and before that I got my bachelor's degree in Linguistics in 3 1/2 years at the University in Georgia. One of those years was spent in Tokyo, however.

I personally believe that a large portion of "diagnosed" mental disorders are in fact faked.

And honestly, how hard WOULD it be to fake any number of mental disorders? I have a relative who's done just that.

There are several people in my family that have mental disorders (including my mother), and I can assure you--it's not about fake or real, it's whether that person chooses to be functioning or non-functioning. My mother is functioning, but if she stops taking her medicine for a day... holy shit. Two of my cousins are bipolar. One has a wife and a job, the other doesn't do anything but sit at home all day because his parents have money. No ambition whatsoever. Of course the severity of the illness has an influence, but a lot of it comes down to strength of will.

I always said it Ack-um-lim >_>

Also, even though I knew Emuz was referring to the "overload" meaning of kafuka, I always associated it with Kafka (the writer) since both are pronounced almost the same way in Japanese :eyeshift:

I read this incredibly heartbreaking article on the New York Times awhile back that reminds me of your situation. I'm not sure if it can bring you comfort, but it made me think a lot about what I would wish for my own parents/grandparents if such a situation ever occurred.

I'm so sorry it has happened this way :(

1. Being able to see green from my window. My neighbors have a huge, lovely garden and something's always in bloom.

2. Five minute walk from the train station.

3. Large kitchen... by Tokyo standards, at least. Most kitchens only have one electric burner and a tiny sink, but mine has two (!) gas burners, an area to cut vegetables and things, and a nice, roomy sink. Unfortunately, having a big kitchen cost me a bathroom sink... but that's getting into the things I don't like about my apartment. >_>
